Protecting our Playground

Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle. These are the golden words in today’s world of industrialization, consumption and ever-increasing threats to our planet. The Earth is a precious resource that we must all do our part to protect.

The Honest Kitchen’s packaging is sensitive to the environment, safe and protective for its food-grade contents, re-sealable, and economical. Our company’s packaging reduces materials usage and waste with a fine, recyclable ‘minimalist’ and unprinted barrier bag that efficiently protects the food inside. That bag is enclosed in a beautiful 100% recycled box made from unbleached kraft paperboard. The box is printed with vegetable-based inks and the finished product is 100% biodegradable or recyclable again after use, too.

100% of our manufacturing for both our products and our packaging, takes place locally here in North America to prevent reliance on excessive transportation and carbon emissions, and we are committed to eliminating virgin materials wherever possible – and eliminating waste by using only those materials that are re-usable, recyclable and biodegradable.

The Honest Kitchen is continuing its commitment to reducing its ‘ecological paw print’ by continuously replacing conventional ingredients with certified organic alternatives wherever possible, as well as sourcing wild-crafted and organic herbs for its supplements. In late 2009, The Honest Kitchen made an important move to 100% free-range, antibiotic-free and sustainably raised chicken from Petaluma Poultry right here in California. Our turkey is already cage-free and our beef will be upgraded to 100% grass-fed, as soon as possible.

During the hot summer months, the company’s food-grade manufacturing facility makes use of sky lights and alters work shifts to make use of the cooler late night and dawn hours for production and packaging to cut electricity usage for air conditioning.

The company uses energy-efficient computer equipment and monitors and has installed long-life, CFL light bulbs and motion-sensor lighting in certain areas of its corporate offices.

The Honest Kitchen is also an approved member of Green America (formerly Co-op America), a non-profit organization whose mission is to harness economic power—the strength of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace—to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society.
