The Honest Kitchen has received a statement of no-objection from the federal Food & Drug Administration, regarding its use of the term ‘human grade’ on all three of its dehydrated pet-food lines. “This is an extremely important accomplishment for our company, and we believe we are the first pet food manufacturer to be able to legally use such a statement on our products” says Lucy Postins, director of marketing for the 18-month old San Diego Corporation. “We went to a great deal of trouble to locate human-food vendors for every ingredient we purchase, and to find a human-food manufacturing facility to make our products, to ensure that the stringent controls in place for human food production really would be applied to our foods as well.” Postins explains. “We have been liaising for several months with the USDA and FDA, regarding the appropriateness of the term “Human Grade” on our product labels and have worked very, very hard to demonstrate to these authorities that every ingredient we use is human-edible. The manufacturing takes place in a human-food processing plant and everything about the products is indeed of human-grade quality” continues Postins. “Of course, we are not intending for these products to be sold for humans to eat, and that was a key point that had to be addressed in this matter.” Postins and other company officials worked closely with the federal agencies to formulate a statement that encompassed its right to commercial free speech, while incorporating a ‘disclaimer’ to indicate that its products were not actually being sold for human consumption. The statement the company now has consent to use on its labels, reads as follows: “This product is made with 100% human food-grade ingredients.
