On Course to be a Big Dog: The Honest Kitchen - One of the Fastest Pups in Town

San Diego, CA The Honest Kitchen announced today that it has made the list of 100 fastest growing private companies in the city, by the San Diego Business Journal.

The company, which manufactures and distributes a line of human-grade, organic and natural diets for dogs and cats, was founded in 2002. The Honest Kitchen has enjoyed growth averaging 100% per year since its inception.

“The pet food recall and ensuing positive publicity earlier this year saw our sales double and even triple in some months. This time last year, we had 4 employees and were happy to break $100K in sales for the month. Now, we’re disappointed if we don’t hit $300K each month and we are looking to increase our staff to 10 in the next couple of months.” Commented Lucas Marquardt, MBA, the company’s Chief Financial Officer.

The Honest Kitchen operates several unique marketing and product development initiatives including its ‘Work For Food’ Program, where dedicated pet professionals receive free pet food in exchange for promoting the company’s products at a grassroots level; ‘Pawlanthropy” the company’s charitable giving initiative (donations to non-profits were almost 25% of net profits in 2006) and an Uber-User’s panel of advisors who provide insight and feedback on new products, packaging and other business decisions in exchange for VIP status on the company’s web site.

The Honest Kitchen is a privately owned, family company presently located in Pacific Beach. The company will be relocating to ‘Wonderhaus’, the old Wonderbread factory downtown near the Ballpark in the fall, once the renovation and restoration of that building are complete. The company is a predominantly woman-owned organization and was founded by an immigrant from the UK.

Executives from The Honest Kitchen will attend an awards ceremony on September 20th in downtown San Diego to receive a plaque and network with other leaders form San Diego’s most successful companies.
