Our Ingredients
We take pride in all the ingredients we source! All our pet foods are 100% human-grade and are held to the same quality standards as the food you feed to your human family. In addition, humans actually taste every ingredient that goes into our recipes, as part of our product development process. Learn more about our pet food quality.
- We never buy genetically modified produce for our products,
- We require organic certification for oats, flaxseed, kelp and coconut, and free-range, antibiotic-free certification for our chicken,
- We require comprehensive spec sheets and certification to verify that every lot of raw ingredients we buy, has been tested clear of salmonella, E-coli, coliform, lead, arsenic and mercury as well as melamine, yeast and mold & pesticide residues, before it even enters our plant.
The Honest Kitchen is also an approved member of Green America, which places a high priority on sustainability, green business and fair-trade. As part as our application for membership, documentation on each of our suppliers both domestically and overseas, was supplied by The Honest Kitchen and evaluated in order to obtain approval for membership of Green America. Businesses such as The Honest Kitchen which bear the green America seal, operate in ways that support workers, communities, and protect the environment.

Free-Range, Sustainably Farmed Chicken
Quality Quick-Fact: Our chicken is USDA certified free-range, humanely raised, vegetarian fed without the use of animal fat or by-products and is never, ever fed antibiotics.
Place of Origin: Petaluma Poultry located in Northern California.
Nutrition Note: The free range birds are raised in roomy, naturally lit barns and have open access to outdoor pens. Free-range chickens are not only better for your pet, sustainable farming also has a positive impact on our planet.

Nutrition Note: Eggs are one of the best sources of vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones as well as an aid to calcium and phosphorus absorption. They are also a good source of fat, protein, essential amino acids, as well as phosphorus, iron, zinc, potassium and vitamin A.

Quality Quick-Fact: Like all the grains we use, our whole rolled Oats are 100% organic.
Nutrition Note: Oats are free of gluten, the substance contained in some grains which causes adverse reactions in some more sensitive pets (and people, too).

Organic Flaxseed
Quality Quick-Fact: Our golden, ground flaxseed is certified organic – and always has been!
Nutrition Note: Flax has often been called “nature’s most perfect food” It is one of the richest sources of omega fatty acids and lignans (potent cancer fighters). Flaxseeds are also loaded with vitamins and phyto-nutrients and a great source of fiber, and protein. Flax is vital for healthy skin, coat, heart, joints, and kidneys. Cranberries
Quality Quick-Fact: Our dried cranberries are natural, unsweetened and free of sulfites.
Nutrition Note: Cranberries are rich in flavonoids which absorb dangerous free radicals or electrons. It also helps promote healthy dilation of blood vessels. Cranberries are known for promoting a healthy urinary tract, inhibit ulcer-causing bacteria from sticking to the stomach lining and support a healthy cardiovascular system. Recent studies have also shown they are able to prevent bacterial adhesion to the teeth, thus reducing dental plaque.

Nutrition Note: Celery contains folate which is essential for the production and maintenance of new cells as well as providing Potassium which helps control our nerves and muscles. It is a natural source of calcium, magnesium and vitamin. ( The Honest Kitchen will source celery from North America beginning August, 2010. Previously, celery was sourced from US operated farms in China, Europe and North America.)

Quality Quick Fact: Our Certified Organic, Fair-Trade Quinoa is grown in Bolivia, South America, the land that’s famous for this amazing ancient grain and is sourced from more than 1000 small, indigenous family farms to provide the families with a valuable, fair-trade income.
Our Quinoa is processed in a facility that is powered by natural gas and solar energy and adheres to the strictest human food safety standards.

Sweet Potatoes
Quality Quick-Fact: Peru is the native home of the sweet potato and we are proud to purchase our sweet potatoes from this country.
Place of Origin: Peru
Nutrition Note: Sweet potatoes are rich in beta carotene, an important form of vitamin A and loaded with potassium which helps maintain the electrolyte balance in the cells, as well as maintain normal heart function and blood pressure.

Our Certified Organic kelp grows in one of the cleanest, most pristine places on Earth – the cold, clean waters of the Breidafjord in northwest Iceland – where conditions are perfect for the growth of spectacular kelps.
Nutrition Note: Rich in iodine which is important to maintain a healthy thyroid gland. It also contains calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulfur, zinc, protein, essential fatty acids, and fiber. Kelp provides nutritive support to the entire body, and also improves circulatory stimulation. It is one of the best weight-reduction plants available.
Wild, line-caught Icelandic Haddock
Quality Quick-Fact: Icelandic Haddock stocks have risen dramatically in the past 5 years. The Haddock is wild caught using a line and hook, which is a sustainable fishing practice.

Apples
Quality Quick-Fact: Our apples are natural, unsweetened and free of sulfates. They also have their peel attached, to increase fiber content and pectin, which is great for digestion.
Place of Origin: Washington, USA or Chile
Nutrition Note: Apples contain insoluble fiber which keeps the digestive tract running smoothly. The soluble fiber that it provides lowers cholesterol and the rise of blood sugar. Apples provide phytochemicals such as quercetin, catechin, phloridzin and chlorogenic acid, all of which are strong antioxidants.
