We have a two year old Maltese that got off to a terrible start in life. When we rescued her at three months she had worms, ticks, fleas and tropical rat mites. I home cooked and it was too rich for her. We tried kibble and she would have starved if that was her only option. Canned food caused a terrible “outcome”, not to mention all the awful ingredients found in most. We started her on a high grade kibble soaked in warm water and mashed up, mixed it with boiled chicken and she finally started eating normally. I still did not think she was getting all the nutrients she needed and despised the option of shoving a bunch of supplements down her throat. Then came The Honest Kitchen Revelation. Keen has been a dream come true. Our little bear is so happy and would eat this stuff twleve times a day if we let her. She is our Alaskan Polar Bear–a buff little Maltese roughing the northern elements! We ust adopted a ten year old toy poodle who, at first, seemed physically and emotionally lost. That was a month ago. She has gained a whole pound, weighing in at five! Her eyes are bright and her personality is beaming! I look at my girls and I am so happy because I know they are healthy! Every time we step foot in the kitchen, they think one of us is going to offer up a Keen cookie! Thank you Honest Kitchen!
Garlic (Allium sativum) has been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes. The Whole Dog Journal has determined that small amounts of garlic not only act as a natural flea repellant, but garlic can also be used for its wonderful antifungal and antibacterial properties. It also promotes the production of white blood cells thereby acting as an immune booster for dogs with low or compromised immunity and may benefit dogs with diabetes by helping reduce blood-sugar levels.
What makes garlic so great for dog health problems? Allicin appears to be the active component in the root bulb (cloves) of the garlic plant and trigger its healing properties.
Heating garlic will lessen the medicinal capabilities, but naturally dehydrating it won’t. That is to say the garlic used in a nutritional supplement, or garlic found in one of our pet food mixes is simply raw garlic that has been crushed and dehydrated.
Despite its healing qualities, Garlic contain does a compound named thiosulphate. In extremely high levels, thiosulphate can be a dangerous toxin that can cause hemolytic anemia in dogs. However, the amount of garlic contained in dog foods and treats, supplements, or healthy table scraps that may have included fresh garlic in the recipe are not high enough to cause a problem.
It is thought that it would take up to 50 cloves for garlic to be harmful to a medium sized dog. In the event of a garlic overdose, the symptoms of hemolytic anemia can develop within a few hours or a few days. Signs include vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, depression, and loss of appetite. If you see these symptoms in your pet and you’re missing a lot of cloves of garlic, call your vet.
At The Honest Kitchen, we have a few products that contain garlic and some products that are completely garlic-free. We list our ingredients in order from highest quantity to lowest so you can tell when you see garlic at the end, it’s being added in moderation to take advantage of its healing properties – while still being far lower than toxic levels.
virtually every list of “foods that are bad or toxic for dogs” says NOT to feed your dog garlic. Garlic and onions both contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. Yet garlic is listed as an ingredient in Keen.

my dane puppy had been eating 1-1.5 out of 3 meals a day for about a week. he was on some canned food from the vet, mixed with dry kibble.
we went to our new favorite store and the owner was making up some Keen for her own dogs, my puppy followed her like a magnet, and showed his best behavior (sitting and ‘looking handsome’). she gave him a taste and he gobbled it down.
i switched to a 1/4 cup of Keen instead of the canned, and the food was gone in about 3 minutes. it even smelled pretty good to me. now i’m thinking of trying the Prowl on my finicky (and allergic) cat.
thanks for giving my dog his appetite back!
This is the first THK food I’ve tried with my dogs. They love it. I also home cook for my dogs and use a Canadian premix to which I add meat, fruit, and vegetables. I think the dogs love the variety. I’ve just bought a box of preference, so I can vary the protein source–want to add some organ meats. Thank you for a great product available locally.
I am torn on Keene – 2 of my dogs just loved it and 2 of them won’t touch it unless i doctor it up and even then they don’t finish it. The 2 that loved it had no problems eating it just the way it is recommended to prepare it on the box. I have switched to the preference and now i add hormone free etc… cooked meats to it and they all eat right away to the last morsel. A bit more complex and expensive but I think but really these kids are worth it.
My German Shepard loves this food. He had been eating Verve. The store was out of Verve so I tried the Keen, I have never seen him so excited to eat.
Keen is an awesome food available at a great price! While I primarily use Embark for my two very active performance dogs, I like to rotate all of the other Honest Kitchen foods for added variety. I love that Keen uses human grade, hormone-free Turkey as the number one ingredient. I’ve been feeding my dogs Honest Kitchen products for 5+ years now and they are healthy, happy pups!
I absolutely love it and so does our dog! Before she would let her food sit for hours and take a nibble now and again, but with Honest Kitchen she is excited to eat! She can’t wait until my wife or I put her bowl down, she’s healthier, thinner and happier. We love this food and recommend it to EVERYONE who wants a happy healthy pet.
