How to Feed – Getting started on our foods

How much food will the box make?

Package Size Equals Dry Measured Cups Yield When Hydrated with water
1 oz. Holds about 1/4 cup Makes 1/2 cup fresh food
4 oz. Holds about 1 cup Makes about 1 lb fresh food
4 lbs holds about 16 to 17 Makes about 16 lbs of fresh food
10 lbs holds about 40 to 43 Makes about 40 lbs of fresh food

A full standard US Measuring Cup of dehydrated food (which is 8 oz by volume or 4 oz by weight) will hydrate to make about 1lb of fresh food.

Up to 10 lbs 1/4 : 1/4 cup up to 1/3 : 1/6 cup
Up to 30 lbs 1/2 : 1/2 cup up to 2/3 : 1/3 cup
Up to 50 lbs 1 : 1 cup up to 1 1/3 : 2/3 cup

Feeding Guidelines – Prowl Cat Food

Cat’s Weight Amount Per Day (Dry)
1 to 6 lbs 1 to 6 tbsp
6 to 10 lbs 6 to 8 tbsp
10 to 16 lbs 8 to 14 tbsp
16 to 20 lbs 14 to 16 tbsp

A 6 oz pouch equates to 1 1/2 cups (dry) and makes just under 1 lb (or three cups) of fresh food. This is comparable with about 3 x standard 5.5 oz cans of cat food.

A 2lb box equates to about 8 cups (dry) and makes about 5 lbs (or 16 cups) of fresh food. This equates to about about 15 x standard 5.5oz cans of cat food.

A 4lb box equates to about 16 cups (dry) and makes about 10 lbs (or 32 cups) of fresh food. This equates to about about 30 x standard 5.5oz cans of cat food.

*1 Standard US Measuring Cup equals about 16 tbsp.

Adding Extras

Our complete foods (all except Preference base-mix) can be fed as stand-alone diets. However, additional ingredients can be added if you wish – but all our foods (except Preference base mix) are complete and balanced so this is optional, not compulsory!

If you do wish to add your own home prepared ingredients, we suggest adding about half a cup of  ‘extras’ for each dry-measured cup of food. Depending on how active your pet is, you can feed slightly less Honest Kitchen food to compensate, or simply add the extras to the normal serving for his or her weight.

Preference is a non-complete base mix, designed to be mixed with your own choice of protein to create a balanced meal.

For convenience, all our feeding guidelines are based on dry-measured cups.

Transitioning your pet to Honest Kitchen food

For dogs transitioning from a processed diet of kibble or canned food, our foods should be introduced gradually, over a period of four to seven days depending on your dog’s sensitivity. Hydrate the food, following the guidelines on the label, and mix a small amount of The Honest Kitchen with the regular kibble or canned food for the first couple of days. Gradually increase the ratio to half and half for a few days, and then completely remove the old food. This will allow the natural ‘friendly’ gut flora in the intestines to get accustomed to the new diet and become more efficient at digesting the new food.

If your pet is already consuming a varied, raw or home cooked diet, our foods can be introduced more quickly, over one or two meals.
