  • Embark- Feature Product

Embark is a delicious grain-free diet made with USDA Hormone-Free Turkey, Certified Organic Flax, Potatoes, Celery, Spinach, Carrots, Coconut, Apples, Kelp, Eggs, Sesame Seeds, Bananas, Cranberries, Rosemary, Vitamins & Minerals.

As the weather begins to cool off, this is a great choice because of its high level of protein & fat which are often required in higher amounts during the colder months.

Embark is particularly suited to puppies, high-energy active dogs and pregnant or nursing bitches. Increased fat levels promote stamina and endurance and help to maintain healthy skin and coat condition. Click here for more detailed information on Embark.

The Honest Kitchen's foods are gently dehydrated which keeps the food fresh and perserved so no harsh chemicals or preservatives have to be added. Dehydration also locks in flavor and nutritional value, and protects the colorful antioxidants and phytonutrients present in the raw ingredients.
Like all three of our dehydrated foods, Embark can be fed alone or mixed with additional fresh ingredients of your choice (for recipe ideas click here visiting our newsletter archives). Embark as well as all of our diets can also be combined with a good quality kibble as a 'healthy topping' if desired.

    Healing Art

Herbs have been known to alleviate many skin problems without using harmful chemicals on our beloved pets. Try these herbs when you are trying to combat fleas, mange or hot spots.

    Fleas

Pennyroyal and Eucalyptus are well known flea fighters. One way to use these herbs is by purchasing their essential oil. You can make a basic recipe by combining a 1/2 a liter of water in a spray bottle with 2 drops of each essential oil. Shake vigorously before each use to disperse the oils in the water and spray on your dog's coat.

*NOTE* Do not use during pregnancy and be sure to follow dosage correctly because essential oils are potent and can irritate skin if not diluted properly. You may want to try a test patch first on a small area of the skin and wait 24hours to see if a reaction occurs.

    Hot Spots

Comfrey is an incredible healer for topical use on the skin, through its' anti-inflammatory, and astringent properties. When used to heal hot spots it is best used in a salve form. You can purchase salves form your local natural food store.
Calendula is another wonderful topical preparation for irritated skin. Many natural health stores sell Calendula in a gel or cream for easy application.

    Mange

Lemon is naturally antiseptic, astringent, and germicidal. A great recipe for treating mange can be found in the book "Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats". The recipe is as follows: "Thinly slice a whole lemon, including the peel. Add it to 1 pint of near-boiling water and let it steep overnight. The next day, sponge the solution onto the animal's skin and let it dry." You can use this daily. This also helps with fleas.

These herbs and oils can form a functional part of any holistic heath care regimen. Try to distract your dog by taking him for a walk or feeding him after applying products to the skin, to give them time to penetrate without being licked off!

When used in conjunction with a natural diet with plenty of natural EFA's (present in flax and meats found in Honest Kitchen diets) and supplements such as Sparkle, these preparations can help to keep the skin & coat in top condition.
