The Yin and Yang of food for pets
In Traditional Chinese Medicine and other Eastern medicinal practices, diet is used in prevention as well as treatment of disease or ailments. The philosophies used are much different then what Westerners are familiar with. This
subject can be very deep and complicated, and further investigation of Eastern practices would be needed to get a full grasp of the subject.
In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) foods are looked on as an extension of medicinal herbs, not just the caloric intake or chemistry of food (protein, fat, etc.). Foods are considered by how they influence the body as a whole:
blood, fluid, and a body's Qi (life force). A core concept of TCM is balance, the yin/ yang. Each Food has yin/ yang qualities to consider and each food has a yin (cool, damp) and a yang ( hot, dry) constitution. A diet should be designed to help heal, not create further imbalance.
Foods are broken down into many categories; those being, direction - does the food influence qi, blood, or fluid upward, downward, inward, or outward, Flavors - sweet (help digestion), sour (astringent/ drying) , pungent
(spicy/ stimulate circulation, ie Garlic), salty (soften) and bitter- (aid digestion). Meridians what is the foods effect on specific organs spleen/ pancreas/ stomach (warming foods), Lung/ Large Intestine (moistening foods),
Kidney/ Urinary Bladder (sweet), Liver/ Gall Bladder (cooling foods), then there is temperature this has to do with the way you feel after you have eaten - cooling, warming, hot, and neutral. And in addition, we need to consider a
way to balance the seasons- spring/ summer (cleansing)- and fall/ winter (warming/ nourishing).
Here are some ideas to help cool those hot hounds this summer.
Cooling meats: Duck, pork, egg
Cooling grains: Millet, Barley, Wheat
Cooling Veggies: Celery, Broccoli, Spinach, Napa Cabbage
These may be some nice additions to your dogs Honest Kitchen meal. All three HK meals remain neutral- to warm. Verve's ingredients being slightly cooler, and Embark's ingredients being warm.
Also food served at room temperature takes less energy to digest, according to TCM it would be best to make each HK meal fresh so that it is served at room temp. Visit the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society website for a
veterinarian trained in TCM. Click here!

Bio: Charlie the Spotted One
We always thought Charlie "The Dalmatian" should be famous and since his start at the Honest Kitchen, this has been happening. He now has his photo on the Honest Kitchen website, he's in our latest brochure, he has
made it onto the page of a training book, and there is even a painting of him by a local artist on a utility box. And more photo opps are in the works.
Everyone has probably heard that Dalmatians have a lot of energy. Well, running top speed with ears flying high is on Charlie Dog's Top 10 list of favorite things to do (see photo for image). Though if you set up a
bowl of Honest Kitchen food on the trail, he would certainly take a moment to clean the bowl before proceding on his route. He loves swimming and could care less about how cold the water is - or whether it is ocean, lake, river, or
simpy splashing around in the muddiest puddle he can find before getting back in the car. White dog, brown mud, ugh!
Dalmatians are quite emotional dogs to say the least, they wear worry on their face, where as, Mosi (our office Ridgeback), one of Charlie's best friends hides his concerns well. Charlie is a 50lb lap dog when he feels
needy, luckily he is small for a male Dalmatian. He does love any kind of adventure, as long as his mom gets to come along too. He has seen a great deal of the country, Mexico too. He loves road trips: San Diego deserts, to Washington to
Glacier National Park.
Those familiar with Dalmatians know how sensitive their systems are. They are proned to kidney and urinary conditions, so quality protein is very important. Commercial kibble will not do for these guys. As with most white, or
pink skinned dogs, they have extremely sensitive skin, mostly related poor quality food. Honest Kitchen was to the rescue in preventing these problems from occuring. Funny enough, Honest Kitchen was Charlie's diet prior to him
and Laurette, Charlie's mom, coming to work here at the HK office.
Charlie dog loves food, so he is not finicky, well he does spit out lettuce. Due to him being an EXTREMELY active dog his diet generally is Embark in the evening, this diet was designed with dogs like Charlie in mind. For
his morning meal Charlie has Verve with some added in meats. Twice a week he gets some raw meaty bones (raw turkey neck or raw marrow bone) as a treat and to keep those 3 1/2 year old pearly white teeth, pearly white.
The only complaint we hear about "Charlie Dog" around the office is his excessivily flowing saliva glands (Drool) when we're doing taste tests for product development!
