  • Helping Children in Niger

This month it seems appropriate for a charity special to support those who are starving in Africa. As we feed our dogs delicious meals each day, it is important to remember that those in other regions of the world are not so lucky. Currently in Niger and other surrounding countries in sub-Saharan Africa, many, many people - including more than 800,000 children under the age of 5, risk starvation because of famine and locust infestation.
Throughout the month of August, a portion of the profits from ALL Double Pack Purchases including three new Charity Double Pack combinations of Verve and Embark, will be donated to Unicef.

Please link to www.unicef.org to find out more about the current catastrophe in Africa. If you would like to make an additional donation, you can do so through the Unicef web site.

    Healthy Joints, Happy Hound

Joint health is an important concern for many pets owners, especially those with large breeds and aging animals. Exercise is an important part of a holistic approach to joint health, and nutritional supplementation is a second facet that can bring welcome relief for pain and inflammation, as well as prevention of bone and joint problems, in many cases.
Glucosamine and chondroitin are widely respected for their ability to relieve joint discomfort. We are often asked why we don't include these substances in our foods. The first reason is that we believe supplementation should be reserved for those pets who really need it, rather than providing it through the diet, indiscriminately.
Secondly, the amount of Glucosamine and Chondroitin that is permitted in pet foods does not generally equate to a therapeutic dose in a single serving of food. More often than not, these ingredients are included as more of a gimmick on the label, rather than being valuable to the pet.
If you think your pet could benefit from supplementation with Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplementation, discuss it with your holistic vet and ask for a recommendation on dosage.

There are a number of other natural supplements on the market to help maintain health joints. Animal Essentials has a couple different supplements that are designed to do just that. The company also offers Animal Apawthecary's product line, which is owned and formulated Greg Tilford and Mary Wulf- Tilford. The Tilford's are recognized experts of veterinary herbal medicine. Animal Apawthecary's herbal formula, Alfalfa/Yucca Blend is one of our favorites for arthritic joints. Alfalfa/Yucca Blend, To view this product line click here or visit www.animalessentials.com .

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) are another important component in joint health. Omega 3 EFA's have particularly anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that the beneficial effects of Omega 3 fatty acids on arthritic and other bone and joint problems, are based on two primary factors:
First, the ability of essential fatty acids to regulate the immune system, which suppresses the attack by our own immune cells on bones, cartilage, and tissues of the body.
Second, the ability of essential fatty acids to decrease the inflammatory response through the production of hormone-like compounds called prostaglandins.

The Honest Kitchen's diets contain a rich source of Omega 3 fatty acids in the form of flax. Another good source is fish oil, although this must be stored very carefully to prevent rancidity. Animal Essentials has an EFA supplement line as well.

Other supplements to consider are MSM, as well as Vitamin C and Cetyl Myristoleate.

Here at the Honest Kitchen, we feel that the first line of defense against arthritic joint is a healthy fresh food diet, and proper, consistant, and fun- age appropriate exercise with our four footed friends is a great line of defense.

    A pinch of Parsley

1 cup of fresh garden veggies of your choice (NO Onions)
    2 sweet potatoes,sliced & washed (peels on)
    1½ quarts water
    1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
    2 tablespoons butter (optional)

Add veggies to pot of water, simmer until soft, take off burner, add parsley. (This herb is very volatile, so too much heat and you will denature some of its wonderful benefits) See our Tid Bit page to learn more on parsley. Use broth to rehydrate your dogs Honest Kitchen meal and add garden veggies with parsley as a nice topper.

    Ditty on Debeau

My name is Debeau, better known as "Deebs". I am what two-legged animals (humans) refer to as a "Golden". Born in Colorado and named after my 110+ pound Big Foot dad named Beauregard, I top out the scales at 82 pounds. For those of you who know the character Deebo from the movie "Friday," (although I do not resemble him), this had an influence on my name as well. I am now a happy 8 year old with a whitening face, though not yet a grandpa. My parents and I love to be in the water and I always feel my mom and dad would like to be cooled off, which means shaking off the excess water right next to them is a nice gesture, right?

Hiking is a favorite activity for my "pack", as dad refers to our family. I lead the pack while always keeping them within my view. I must be around people at all costs, which is why I join the two-legged animals at Balboa Dog Park, and only run off if a squirrel wants to play! I do occasionally meet a four-legged animal who grabs my attention. Since joining my mom at work, my two favorite four-legged friends there, Charlie dog and Mosi, are pretty great to see everyday! When those two get all riled up, I just watch and think, "kids! You gotta love ‘em". In my spare time, sitting atop my perch at home, while the whole world walks by. On slow evenings, I try to catch flies in my mouth and chew sticks.

I have just switched my diet this year and am now eating 100% fresh food...The Honest Kitchen with a little raw mixed in. People always tell my mom that I look younger than eight, we just let them know "it's all in the food!" Being a Golden Retriever, we are prone to allergies, hypothyroidism, hip problems and becoming overweight quite easily. Most allergies when conventionally treated involve the use of antihistamines or steroids, which simply mask the problem. Luckily my mom knows better.

My diet is first and foremost in fending off aging, allergies and even combatting common irritants and other ailments. With my high quality food, omega-3 supplement, digestive enzymes and garlic; if fleas are around, they aren't for long when they realize I am not a good candidate as their playground !!
