Honest Kitchen Spotlight
Westminster Dog Show
This world famous canine event takes place each year and enjoys a loyal following by dog lovers everywhere. The Honest Kitchen is proud to supply food to several of this year's contenders. Here are a couple:
CH O-Na-Pei YK Shuda Been A Cowboy a Chinese Shar-Pei called " Toby" is bred & owned by Georgette Schaefer of Maclean, VA. Georgette is also an authorized distributor of our products through her company, Pet Alternative (703)
556-3955.
Camelot Rhodesian Ridgebacks, the breeder of two participating Rhodesian Ridgebacks is also a long time Honest Kitchen customer. The following Ridgebacks bred by Camelot competed at Westminster this year: Ch Camelot's
Promise To Bakari SC and Ch Camelot's Code Red. www.camelotrr.com
We are proud to have additional representation at Westminster this year, from Tracie Hotchner, author of the brand new best selling book, ‘The Dog Bible'. More on Tracie's book in the first edition of our brand new monthly
book review, below.
Not only have Honest Kitchen dogs been in the spotlight, but our food has too, in recent weeks! Firstly we were awarded of ‘Dog Food Of The Year' The Dog Products of the Year Awards are presented by www.PupLife.com, a leading retailer in the online dog supply business.
In selecting the 2nd Annual Dog Products of the Year, the company examined a number of factors, including customer feedback, product testing results, and, of course, overall sales. PupLife.com President, Eric Houtkooper remarked, "We are extremely selective about the products that we carry. We rigorously test all of our products, gather customer feedback and gauge sales throughout the year. Only then do we choose the best in each category for our
list of Products of the Year."
The winner of Best Dog Food Product of the Year should come as no surprise to industry insiders. The Honest Kitchen is one of the fastest growing dog food brands in the country, and their dehydrated raw diet is a runaway hit
with consumers. "Many people are turning to
raw food diets, also known as BARF diets (biologically appropriate raw food) when it comes to feeding their dogs," Eric Houtkooper commented. "At long last, we have found a nutritionally complete and balanced raw food diet that is also
easy to prepare (just add warm water) and serve," he added.
Following our award as Dog Food of The Year, we were approached by San Diego's Local 8 News, KFMB, for an interview and live studio taste testing. The news anchor herself even tasted our delicious Smooches cookies for
pooches and gave them two paws up!

A Wild Charity for the Coming Month.
This issue, we'd like to feature ‘Defenders of Wildlife' as our chosen charity. www.defenders.org Defenders of Wildlife is a leader in wolf conservation since wolves first appeared on the federal endangered species list.
This organization is publicizing the plight of Idaho's wolf population and attempting to highlight the need for strong federal protections for the fragile wolf population in Idaho.
Defenders of Wildlife is also actively working to prevent the practice of aerial gunning of Alaska's wolf population where 400 wolves have already been killed by this practice.
Throughout the coming weeks, a portion of the profits from all double pack sales will be directed to Defenders of Wildlife to assist with Wolf Conservation efforts in the United States. We hope you will visit www.defenders.org to see how you can help too.

container. We are pleased to announce the release of our 4lb bucket of Prowl. This 4lb bucket will make about 10lbs of cat food, equal to about 30 of the 5.5 oz cans. You can purchase this on the Prowl page of our website,

Anxiety and the Power of Flowers
Each newsletter, we like to bring attention to other modalities of healing.
This month we would like to feature Flower Essence therapy.
These were developed in the 1900s by Dr. Bach, a physician in England. Dr. Bach believed that healing should be gentle, painless and non-invasive.
The 38 flower preparations have harmonious effects with other approaches of treatment, conventional and holistic. These Preparations are dilute infusions of flowers and tree buds. This type of therapy and its effects are mild, so
overuse does not have a compounding result. They act primarily on the mental state, improving physiological conditions which support physical improvements.
These Flower remedies are also effective in treating some conditions that develop shortly after a traumatic or upsetting experience. Flower essence therapy expands upon the belief that our four legged friends are beings with souls.
Therefore, the degree of support in the immediate environment of the dog or cat has a marked value on the level of efficacy.
Showing / Traveling Dogs and Cats
Flower Essences are extremely useful in Animals, possibly due to an anti-filtering capacity. In some sense, humans detract from the experience, with our own knowledge and agendas. Animals do not have this filter. With Dogs and Cats
on the road for showing purposes, or travel with their two-legged companions on road trips and moves, this therapy has proven beneficial. These circumstances can prove stressful, unaccommodating, and deviate from the animal's routine.
Specifically, the Five Flower Formula of Rescue Remedy is calming to any person or animal. This is recommended by Natural Healer and Herbal Educator, Christina Blume in Colorado. She suggests it be on hand and used during any
emergency, trauma, or stressful situation, i.e. trips to the vet, animals over heating, car accident, new pet, etc. We should also mention that Vitamin C and B complex are important to supplement during this time, to aid the dog or cat in
dealing with the stress.
If you would like more information on the uses and benefits of Flower therapies, please visit some of the sites below.

Beefy additions
Beef Stew
How does a hardy warm stew sound to you on a cold day? Our guess is that your dogs and cats most likely feel the same way. (Yum!) This recipe can be doubled in size and a portion frozen for another day, well this would of course be
judged by the size of your fur family.
As with most of the recipes we offer, the choice is yours whether you choose to add in cook the meats or serve them raw. (Remember Never Feed Cooked Bones)
2lb beef chuck (Organic, or grass fed where available)
2 Tbsp olive oil
2 ¼ cup of stock (beef, or vegetable)- please note that stock should be made without onion.
2- 3 cloves garlic
1 large white potato (cubed)
1 large sweet potato (cubed)
2 medium carrots ( sliced)
1 ½ tpsp flour (optional, to thicken broth)
1 tsp. thyme (digestive aid, antimicrobial)
1 tsp. sage (antiseptic aid against E.coli, salmonella)
½ tsp. garlic powder(stimulate immune system and circulation)
Brown beef chuck with 1 tbsp. olive oil over medium heat, about 5 min (cooking); Add garlic and sauté 1 min.; Add stock. In a separate pan add remaining olive oil and veggies, simmer 20 minutes (until golden). Add veggies to the broth
and meat. You can add some spices of thyme, garlic powder, and flour to thicken. Simmer 1 hour. Remove from heat and let cool down to room temp. The stew can be used to help hydrate your pet's Honest Kitchen meal and the chunks of beef
and veggies are a delicious topping.
Shephard's Pie
1 lb ground beef (Hormone/ antibiotic free)
1 large winter squash
2 large potato
1 cups Spinach (organic if available)
1/2 cup fresh parsley (aid digestion)
1/4 cup grated parmesian cheese
Cook ground beef in skillet under medium heat; you can boil or bake the potato and squash, we recommend cut squash in half and de-seed, then cube, mash all together. In a 12x 12 layer ground beef, washed spinach, and top layer squash/
potato mix; bake 350 degrees for 20 min. Top with fresh parsley and sprinkle with parmesian cheese.
Did you know, grass fed beef has 2-6 times more of Omega 3 essential fatty acid? Omega 3's are not only good for you and "heart healthy", but essential for growth, development and maintaining healthy cell function.

Book review
The Dog Bible by Tracie Hotchner
We're pleased to announce a brand new feature for the 2006 editions of our monthly newsletter. Each month we'll provide a summary and review of a different ‘holistic or health themed' dog or cat publication. If you have a favorite book
that you'd like us to review, or perhaps there's one you've considered buying but just can't decide - let us know and we'll add it to our list!
To kick off this new feature, we have a review of Tracie Hotchner's The Dog Bible, which was published just a few months ago and is already receiving critical acclaim as one of the most valuable publications for those who are brand new to
owning a dog and seasoned pet owners alike!
The Dog Bible is a very comprehensive work, with a format similar to an encyclopedia. It covers a wealth of information, including: guidelines to follow before getting a dog, behavioral & training issues, a great section on managing dogs &
children, health tips, vaccination issues and ways to ensure you keep your dog safe in daily life.
The format of the book is extremely clear and easy to understand. It is ultra-practical and contains one of the broadest ranges of topics we've ever seen, in a book of this kind. We highly recommend The Dog Bible for anyone who is
considering or has already welcomed a new canine member of their family.
We are looking forward to the next edition of the book and would love to see an expanded section on alternative health care and natural nutrition!
More information on this fantastic tome can be found at thedogbible.comIt truly contains everything your dog wants you to know.
As always, we love to hear feedback from Honest Kitchen customers. Please forward any suggestions for articles or comments to service@thehonestkitchen.com.
Ever notice, Cat Spelled Backwards Does Not Spell God
He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader.
He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion
