Welcome - And Thanks!
Welcome to our November Newsletter. Firstly, we'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who sent good wishes our way during the terrible wildfires that affected our county
in October. It was a frightening time for many families and their pets. Things have returned to normal for The Honest Kitchen but many are not as fortunate. We made a number of product donations to various evacuation centers around the
county during the fires and this month, a portion of the profits from all online sales will be donated to the ASPCA in recognition of the life-saving work they do every day, and especially when
disaster strikes.

Be Prepared
Of course any emergency preparedness plan should account for our beloved animal companions.
Some fantastic pointers on what do ahead of time, in case of a disaster, can be found below. This article is adapted from the work of one of our most favorite animal communicators, Paula Brown. To find out

Have a safe place to take your pets
• Don't wait until a disaster happens before you start thinking about where to go. Have a list of pet-friendly hotels and check their policies on size, number of pets. Ask whether ‘no pet' policies are waived during
emergencies.
• If an evacuation is ordered, call ahead to make a reservation. Ask friends, co-workers or relatives in the area of they would be willing to shelter your animals in case of emergency. Several pets in one household are most
comfortable if housed together but be prepared to house them separately.
• Keep a list of boarding facilities and vets in your emergency kit, along with 24 hr contact information. As a last resort, find out if your local shelter or humane society could accommodate your pet in the event of a
disaster.
Assemble a portable pet disaster supply kit.
• Keep it in an easily accessible place. Include medications, medical records(in a waterproof container), insurance documents, first aid supplies as well as leashes and carriers that would be necessary to transport your pet.
• Use a permanent marker to write your cell phone number on the leash or carrier that's in your kit; this is important to make sure you and your pet can re-connect in the event of a separation.
• Also include current photos of your pets so that they can be correctly identified as yours.
• A note with your pet's feeding schedule, medications and other info that a temporary caretaker might need, is also important. On this paper, you can include the name and number of a ‘backup' caretaker (your chosen
friend or shelter) who could accommodate your pet in the event that you become separated.
• Include enough food for one week if possible, as well as some bottled water and portable bowls. An herbal or homeopathic calmer, or some chamomile teabags to make a tea which you can put in drinking water or food, is
also useful for pets who are made anxious by change.
Know what to do as disaster approaches.
• Don't wait until the last minute and you are already in harm's way. A calm, earlier evacuation is much smoother and safer than a last minute, panicked rush. Bring all pets into the house and ensure they are wearing collars
with identification.
• If you aren't home when an evacuation is ordered, ask a friend or neighbor to take your pets and meet you at an agreed location. This person should be comfortable with your pets, know where they are likely to be, know
where your emergency kit is stored and have a key to your home.
A Puppalicious Recipe
Doggie Birthday Cake!
Puppy got a birthday coming soon? This scrumptious (but not too naughty) cake will be sure to make it a special day!
For The Cake:
4 cups Force
2 table spoons Ice Pups
2 large eggs
3 tablespoons honey
1 cup plain yogurt
Optional:
1/2 cup freeze dried chicken or beef.
Or
˝ cups smashed up Smooches or Nuzzles.
For The Icing:
1 cup Plain Yogurt
2 strips Bacon
What To Do:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pre-grease a 10 inch cake pan (you can use butter or vegi oil). You can also line the pan with a strip of wax paper to encourage easy release.
Combine in a bowl the Force and the Ice pups and sift together.
In a separate bowl combine the eggs and the yogurt. Whisk at high speed for 3 minutes. Gradually add in honey.
Reduce the speed to low and add in the dry mixture cup by cup.
Then add in any extras you'd like and mix in.
Bake in oven for 25-35 minutes, until you can insert a toothpick and it comes out clean.
Let cool on a rack for 10 minutes.
Cook up 2 pieces of bacon and chop them into small pieces.
Carefully invert cake onto a serving dish.
Ice with the plain yogurt and sprinkle with bacon bits.
Serve up!!!
Store Of The Month
Our featured store this month is Woof & Tails in Lancaster, PA
The store's owner, Jan Myers started Woof & Tails almost 20 years ago. The focus shifted 8-9 years ago to all-natural focal point - in her words, "eliminating Science Diet, IAMS…everything in the store is all-natural".
Jan is also limiting toy items and food to US-made items.
She has noticed a change in her customer base with "more and more customers paying attention to what they are feeding and learning about their own health when their pet is going through a crisis."
Woof & Tails has carried HK since our inception…"the food goes over very well, with grain-free selling the best." Call 717-481-9663 to find out more about this great little shop!
Words of Appreciation
We just LOVE all the letters and emails we receive every week from customers who just want to tell us how much our products have helped their pets. Here are a couple of
recent notes we've received.
Hi~
I just wanted to let you know how thankful I am to have tried your products!
My 2 1/2 year old French Bulldog, Claire, does wonderfully on your food. She has always been an "easy" girl to feed. No tummy upsets, never questions whats in front of her. She had been having issues with feet chewing. My vet (also my
employer) put her on Hill's Ultra Z/D diet for a month. Not much improvement. Then we tried Eukanuba Response--zilch. I tried a few other natural diets--after one in particular her ears turned beet red and swelled!
I had read about your products and found my favorite dog boutique, Crazy K9, carried it. I started Claire with Embark, to put weight on her. Can I just say she LOVED it?! Now we also use Force to give
her a variety.
I was running low last week, and imagine my horror when Crazy K9 was out of both diets. They had Verve, but she doesn't do well with oats. I had since run out, and their shipment won't be in until Tuesday-ish. I had given her Solid
Gold's Tripe - Paws red, ears red, her poor bum is red! Needless to say, I won't let this happen again!
Aloha from Hawaii,
Patty & Claire
Hello-
My 14 year old Bichon had started to decline rapidly; he had lost weight, had constant bouts of bloody diarrhea, and began to sleep most of the time, not even wanting to go for a walk. Then he stopped eating. With a heavy heart, I made an
appointment at the vet for possible euthanasia, but decided to wait one more week. I told my neighbor the sad news, she suggested I try your food, and gave me a sample. I gave him one teaspoon of Force (after hydrating), and to my
surprise, he ate it! I increased the amount at every meal, and eventually he was eating full rations for his size, twice a day. His stools became normal within 3 days, his energy level increased within the week, and happily, I canceled the
"possible euthanasia" appointment at the vet. It's been 6 weeks now, and he has gained some weight, his eyes are bright, and he bounces and runs around like he did years ago. He no longer has itchy skin or bad breath. I feed Force to both
him and my 1 year old Portuguese Water Dog, and they both dance around, waiting for it to be ready. My Bichon eats every bit, licking the bowl, and everyone, including my dog walker, calls his transformation a miracle. Thank you, Honest
Kitchen, because you literally saved my dog's life.
