Honest Kitchen Switches to Free-Range Chicken

Posted: Wednesday, September 16, 2009, 7:48 p.m., EDT

The Honest Kitchen celebrated its upcoming switch to free-range chicken by decorating its booth at SuperZoo with feathers, which can now be found throughout the exhibit hall. The Honest Kitchen unveiled plans on Sept. 15 to transition its chicken-based dehydrated raw pet foods to free-range, antibiotic-free, vegetarian-fed chicken this fall.

The Honest Kitchen Switches to Free-Range Chicken

Petaluma Poultry, a division of Coleman Natural Foods, will be the sole provider of the chicken to the Honest Kitchen.

The company said it will incur a “significant” extra cost for the upgraded ingredients.

“Humane farming and respect for the origins of our food are very important to me on a personal level, and it’s been a long term ambition of our entire staff to be able to offer this level of quality to our consumers,” said Lucy Postins, founder and president of The Honest Kitchen. “To enable our consumers to embrace this upgrade during a time when everyone is trying to cut back, we are absorbing all costs, meaning costs will not increase on the shelf.”

Postins has wanted to switch to the free-range chicken for three years but was finally able to make the move this year, in part due to solid sales growth. The company’s sales are up 35 percent this year, she said, driven in part by market acceptance of the company’s value-oriented Keen line.

The Honest Kitchen Feeds Canines Walking for a Cause
Holistic Pet Food Company Provides Premium Dehydrated, Raw Diet for “2 Dogs, 2,000 Miles” Benefit Walk for Canine Cancer

San Diego, Calif. (May 1, 2008) – The Honest Kitchen, makers of organic and holistic dehydrated raw pet food, today announced the donation of food for the “2 Dogs 2,000 Miles” benefit walk, which aims to help provide funding for the first-ever nationwide epidemiological study of the causes of canine cancer. Hudson and Murphy, the Great Pyrenees dogs joining owner Luke Robinson on his trek, will be treated to The Honest Kitchen’s dehydrated, raw, human-grade pet food throughout the duration of their 2,400 mile adventure to raise awareness and find a cure for the deadly disease.

Robinson and his dogs embarked on the multi-state walk March 16 in Austin, Texas, and will finish in Boston, Mass. The mission of “2 Dogs 2,000 Miles” is to encourage education and community involvement through their journey and the team will be meeting with several animal and cancer groups along the way. All proceeds from the walk will go to the Animal Cancer Foundation to finance the canine cancer study. Other sponsors of the walk include Whole Earth Provision, InClover, Connectin, Princeton Tec and Nature’s Farmacy.

“The Honest Kitchen is committed to the health and wellbeing of animals through proper nutrition, and we are thrilled to be part of Luke, Murphy and Hudson’s mission,” said Lucy Postins, co-founder of The Honest Kitchen. “High quality food is just one way to help prevent illness in our furry friends, and we know our food will help give Murphy and Hudson the energy to fulfill their quest. The dedication and giving nature exemplified by the trio is nothing short of heartwarming. The Honest Kitchen thanks this team for their efforts to discover the causes of canine cancer.”

“2 Dogs 2,000 Miles” was temporarily put on hold under speculation that Murphy, one of the puppy participants, may have developed cancer. However, Murphy’s pathology reports were negative and the fundraising adventure is back in full swing.

The Honest Kitchen will provide food for Murphy and Hudson for the entire duration of the walk, which is expected to last approximately 10 months. All of The Honest Kitchen holistic products are made with 100 percent human-grade food ingredients without any preservatives or pesticides. In addition, The Honest Foods does not use genetically modified fruits and vegetables, all meats are hormone and antibiotic free and many of the ingredients are organic.
