My husband and I were looking to adopt a dog, we both grew up with animals and were missing having a pup around the house. I found Cole through Petfinder and immediately called the shelter to make an appointment to come meet him. Cole was on death row in a high kill West Virginia shelter and a local non-kill shelter had sent a truck down to pick up him and some other "inmates." They warned me that they had received hundreds of applications for him but just couldn't seem to find the right match. When we arrived at the shelter it was love at first sight, I knew without a shadow of a doubt that this dog was for us. The three of us hit if off and we filled out all the necessary paperwork, they advised us that after they called our references and did a home inspection they would give us their answer. Later that week we received a call that we could come get our new pup. We were beyond thrilled, when we arrived at the shelter they gave us a small bag of food and sent us on our way. I couldn't figure out why Cole had ended up in a shelter. He was house trained, well behaved, smart, sweet as sugar and absolutely adorable.
The reason became very clear when Cole started to whine in the middle of the night. I got up to let him out, this continued for the entire night, I chalked it up to nerves from being in a new home. This went on for a week, I took him to my vet, they gave him something to suppress his system and told me to change his food. I followed their instructions and he got better until I took him off his medicine. This went on for 5 months, we tried EVERYTHING. Every kind of food, different vets, different medicine, tests, nothing was working. I was becoming desperate for a good night's sleep and I could see that Cole was feeling bad about waking me up. I started to sleep on the couch with him to avoid going up and down the stairs all night.
One Sunday I was scouring the internet for any answer as to what could be going on. I came across a blog where they talked about Amy, a holistic nutritionist in my area, they made mention of her working miracles. I called their number and her husband picked up, when he I said "hello" my voice started to quiver and I began to cry. I was tired, frustrated and so scared that something was really wrong with my pup. He told me to bring Cole right down. When I got there, Amy took one look at him and handed me a box of "Force." She said very firmly, he has an allergy, plain and simple. I was sure she was wrong and I was also sure that my dog was not going to touch the food. Her instructions were clear and she told me to call her in the morning and let her know how things were going.
I went home and prepared the food with the add-ins, per Amy's instructions. Cole devoured the food and I waited for the whining to go outside to start. There was no whining and for the first time in 5 months, Cole and I got a full night's sleep. She fixed my dog OVERNIGHT. Amy has taught me so much about nutrition, vets, food, etc and since that day Cole and I have never looked back.
I know that Cole ended up in the shelter because of his allergy/stomach issues. I spent thousands of dollars at the vet's office and had zero success. I'm sure his previous owners gave up on him. It was sheer luck that I found Amy and The Honest Kitchen and they both saved my dog. I can't begin to explain my gratitude, Cole has changed my life in ways that you can't imagine. It's a true rags to riches story!
