5 Ways To Celebrate Adopt A Shelter Pet Day

Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is April 30.

Here are a few things you can do to make the most of this awesome day!

Every shelter dog (and cat, and rabbit, and bird…) has its day. And that day is April 30—Adopt a Shelter Pet Day! It’s a dedicated holiday to talk about the myths surrounding shelter animals and to encourage people to adopt from a rescue or shelter, and not to buy dogs and cats from pet stores (which often come from dubious sources). If you observe this holiday (and why wouldn’t you!?!), we’ve put together five festive ways you can celebrate Adopt A Shelter Pet Day.

Share stories of how an adopted animal changed your life

There’s nothing like a personal story that comes straight from the heart to encourage your cause. Other would-be pet parents will respond to an open and honest experience—it reassures them that if you can do it, so can they! Sharing your story can be as simple as posting a picture with one word about how your furry best friend changed your life. You can even take it a step further by finding a shelter dog or cat that’s up for adoption and promote them on your blog or social media pages.

Ask your city or local businesses to hold an Adoptathon

Work with a shelter to hold an official shelter pet adoptathon at an official city location or a large business, where the goal is to encourage the adoption of shelter pets. As well as having dogs, cats, and other pets at this event, ask trainers, groomers and pet product companies to join your cause. They can give out free advice, hold prize draws, and sell their wares. Adoptathons are a wonderful way to raise awareness of shelter pets and hopefully find them a forever home.

Bring homemade treats to your local shelter

A homemade treat makes a world of difference to rescue animals. It’s like having a little taste of a forever home while waiting for their new family. The treats you make at home are more likely more nutritious than most of the treats donated to the shelter, so be sure to add some fresh fruits and veggies to your cookies. Get your kids and co-workers involved by holding a baking challenge. Form a small group of bakers, each person responsible for whipping up a different recipe. Before the big day, the group meets to pool all the homemade treats and decide what shelters will be getting them. Not only does it allow for variety, but more homemade treats mean more shelters and dogs will get to enjoy them!

Celebrate your adopted pet’s day with a party

When you adopt a shelter pet, there may be no information as to his birthdate. But that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate the occasion! Make April 28 the day you party hardy with your adopted dog or cat. Put on some party hats, bake a pet-friendly cake and wrap a few special presents—this is a time to kick up your paws and revel in how much better your life is because of your shelter pet!

Adopt a shelter pet

If you can adopt a shelter pet, this is the day to do it! Many shelters offer discounted prices, free microchipping, doggy starter kits and more on Adopt a Shelter Pet Day. Even if you aren’t ready to take the plunge just yet, take advantage of all the information available during local events promoting local shelter animals. Book a tour of your local shelter, meet some animals in need and learn what’s involved in becoming a pet parent. You may not take home a pooch or kitty that day, but when the time comes…you’ll be ready!
