Chickpea Dog Treat Recipe

A savory gluten-free dog treat recipe with a protein punch!

Also known as the garbanzo bean, chickpeas come conveniently loaded with protein. For pet parents looking for grain-free treat options, chickpea flour is another great substitute for pooches with food sensitivities. Plus, the fiber found in chickpeas can help keep your dog regular, and this legume boasts the benefits of lecithin, potassium, and vitamins A, B and C. And unlike other grain- and gluten-free flours, chickpea flour has the same binding properties as wheat-based flour, making it much easier to keep cookies together when you’re cutting into the dough.

Chickpea Dog Treat Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups chickpea flour
  • 1/5 cup The Honest Kitchen Kindly formula dry dehydrated food
  • 1 tablespoon flax meal
  • 1 banana
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, mash ripe banana, peanut butter and egg until completely combined and smooth. You can use an electric mixer if you have one, but it's not necessary - a fork works just as well.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the flour and flax seed. Add the wet and dry ingredients together until the dough comes together.
  4. This dough is going to be tougher than others you may have baked with before. Set parchment paper on the counter to roll the dough out onto. Place a fist-sized ball of dough in the center of the parchment paper. Fold the paper the edges meet and completely cover the dough. Roll the dough over the paper to a 1/2- to 1/4-inch thickness and cut out the cookies using a cookie cutter of choice. Transfer the cookies to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Bake cookies for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Chickpea flour treats don't take long to cook, so check in on them every 5 minutes.
  6. Cool treats on cooling rack for 2 hours to harden.
  7. Store in fridge or freezer in airtight container.

Recipe Notes

If this is your first time working with chickpea flour, you'll find it tougher to work with than regular flour. As well, it gives off a savory scent, but that doesn't put off dogs one bit!
