Meet Kelley: An Overweight Dachshund Turned Into an Inspiration

A year ago Joe and Denise Della Ferra met a big “tootsie roll” of a Dachshund named Kelley.

Within minutes of seeing Kelley, Joe was on the ground laughing and playing with her and a couple other Dachshunds—it was definitely love at first sight. Immediately after the three of them met each other, Joe and Denise decided to adopt Kelley as their own.

The Road to Recovery

Kelley was 10 pounds overweight, which made her a very large 30-pound wiener dog.  She couldn’t walk up the few stairs in front of their house, and her belly dragged on the ground, so Joe and Denise’s first goal was to get her down to a normal weight. They feared that if she stayed as large as she was that she might get back problems—the thought of her being forced to walk around with wheels scared them. Kelley’s size and knowing that they could help her out inspired them to lose weight as well.

Their first solution was to find a good food and use portion control to bring down Kelley’s weight. Since Kelley has a thyroid condition, it’s really easy for her to gain weight, so finding the proper food was very important.

Joe and Denise heard the success stories about The Honest Kitchen and decided to jump on the train and fed it to her from day one. They decided to use the Grain Free Chicken Recipe because its lower fat content would help Kelley lose weight easier.

Kelley was almost 30 pounds when Joe and Denise got her, but after a while she started to lose weight. They said that the best part of using The Honest Kitchen was that the directions on the box are perfect. Since day one they never deviated from the instructions—they fed Kelley twice a day using the same amount of food every time. Every month or so when they went to the veterinarian, Kelley weighed in a couple pounds less than last time. Going on regular walks and using the recommended amount of food was enough to get Kelley down to a normal 20-pound weight and keep her there.

Joe and Denise are ecstatic about The Honest Kitchen and what it’s done for Kelley. “The results we’ve seen in the past 12 months are incredible,” Joe said. The Honest Kitchen is an integral part of their life every day now, and they never plan on changing.

A Beautiful, Fur-Covered Inspiration

Kelley’s “svelte and sexy” body is now a bundle of energy. Seeing her run around with her tail wagging and tongue flapping has inspired both Joe and Denise. While they’ve been helping Kelley to lose weight, they both have lost some themselves in the past year; Joe has lost 20 pounds and Denise has lost 14 pounds. “I’m not done yet,” said Joe. “I’ve still got another 40 pounds I want to lose. I bought a pair of pants a size smaller so I have some motivation. I can’t go back now!”

Kelley is the most content dog you’ll ever meet; she finds sun spots to bathe in, takes naps on her people’s laps, plays with all of the neighborhood dogs, and swims in the neighbor’s pool. The only sound you’ll hear from her are a few seconds of barking when the doorbell rings. She warms right up to anyone, child and adult alike, with her curious nose and her insistent requests for belly scratches. But cats and squirrels be forewarned—she will chase you down until you jump in a tree.

The happiest you’ll ever see Kelley is when Denise gets out her Honest Kitchen box of Grain Free Chicken dog food—which lasts a conveniently long 6 weeks while following the directions. Kelley comes running into the kitchen and does a little dance while Denise prepares the food. She’ll pace, rock back and forth, stand on her hind legs—all while licking her chops waiting to dig in. As soon as the bowl is set down, she goes to town. Kelley licks the bowl until it’s spotless, and then just keeps on licking until Denise picks up the bowl.
