6 Things To Know About Human Grade Pet Food

Do you know what it means for pet food to be labeled 'Human Grade'? The requirements may surprise you!

1) Human Grade pet food means the product is fit for human consumption. It’s also termed ‘food grade’ or ‘edible,’ by AAFCO and FDA.

2) Human Grade food is manufactured, packed, transported and held in accordance with federal regulations for human food.

3) Human food production facilities must also incorporate a HACCP plan for food safety. It takes place under much stricter standards for cleanliness, record-keeping and overall quality.

4) Regular pet food is classed as ‘Feed Grade’, which means it’s unfit for human consumption because of its ingredients, or the way it’s been made.

5) Even if a pet food company uses some human grade ingredients, if they don’t make their product in a human food facility, they can’t legally call it Human Grade.

6) The Honest Kitchen is the only pet food company with FDA approval to use the term ‘Human Food Grade’ on labels.
