A Quick Word About Peas

peas for dogs

While whole (unflaked) green peas and other legumes like chickpeas or lentils can be challenging for some pets to digest and may cause gas, we’ve found a way to serve peas in an easily digestible ‘flaked’ form.

A flaked pea is a whole green pea that’s been squashed flat to break down its outer shell, so it’s actually well tolerated even by pups with sensitive tummies, especially once their intestinal flora have had a chance to develop the enzymes needed to break down the trisaccharides that legumes contain.

Green peas are a great source of nutrients like iron, Vitamins A & K, potassium, plus magnesium and phosphorus for blood, bone and muscle health. They’re also a phytonutrient powerhouse, containing antioxidants such as flavonoids (catechin and epicatechin), the carotenoid lutein and polyphenols. Peas are also a fabulous source of the master antioxidant and phytonutrient Glutathione, which is important for many functions in the body, including regulating immune response.

Green peas have a neutral thermal nature and act as a Yin Tonic, according to Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. Because they’re rich in soluble fiber, green peas also help to maintain healthy digestive motility.

Our human grade flaked green peas are not the same as fractional ingredients like pea fiber or pea protein, which are often used as cheap fillers in conventional pet food. In fact if you buy human foods like prepared soups, you might even consumer the exact same green peas we use in some of our recipes!
