Weâve decided to remove alfalfa from our food formulations this summer, for the following reasons:
- Weâve begun process of verification with the Non-GMO Project for some of our recipes. Although our Alfalfa is certified organic, there is a concern about genetic drift, which involves the cross contamination of non-GMO crops with pollen from genetically modified crops.
- In addition, our customer surveys have shown that Alfalfa is increasingly an ingredient that many pets canât tolerate, based on owner observations of sensitivities, or the results of allergy testing.
In Preference, weâre excited to replace the alfalfa with green peas, which are a nutritious vegetable thatâs comparably rich in protein. Our peas, which are also used in a couple of our brand new recipes, are whole green peas that have been flaked to ensure easy digestion (and are not the same as pea fiber, which is used in some conventional pet foods). Peas are also a fabulous source of the master antioxidant and phytonutrient Glutathione, which is important for many functions in the body, including regulating immune response. In the other recipes where weâve used alfalfa previously, weâre simply compensating for the removal by increasing the remaining ingredients proportionately, because the percentage of alfalfa in the formula was so minimal.
Alfalfa will no longer be used in our formulas, beginning with our July 2014 production run. Beginning August 2014, youâll see the change noted on our boxes and our web site. Please note that some of our 1oz mini sample packets will still have alfalfa listed for a couple more months, before the transition to new packaging is made. Any Preference box that contains peas, will have peas listed on the label, without exception.
We very rarely make adjustments to our formulas, but we feel this change is important and will take great care to make the transition in a precise and coordinated way.
Please let us know if you have any questions on this change â weâre here to help!
