Taurine in Dog Food

Taurine in Dog Food

The amino acid Taurine is vital for heart health and is naturally present in meat and fish, especially organs. The Honest Kitchen’s recipes are naturally high in the amino acid, taurine, thanks to our high-quality meat ingredients and gentle production methods. Historically, taurine was not supplemented in canine diets, as dogs are able to make their own (as long as the recipe contains the minimum AAFCO recommended levels of cysteine and methionine). However, it does appear that certain breeds have varying degrees of either making or absorbing taurine (including one of the most popular breeds in the US, the Golden Retriever). As of early 2019, we began adding a human grade taurine supplement to further boost the naturally existing taurine levels already present in our recipes. All of our dog food recipes now include this supplement and you can feel confident knowing your dog is getting the recommended level of taurine to ensure heart health.
