Introducing Wholemade: A Fresh Look at Our Dehydrated Recipes

The Honest Kitchen's Wholemade Dog Food recipes on a wooden countertop with a bowl of food next to it to illustrate how the product comes to life. /

Back in 2002, The Honest Kitchen launched with just a handful of dehydrated recipes. Over the last 20+ years, we’ve seen how much these meals have meant to pets (and their people!) across the country.

But there was always one little problem: no one really knew what to call them. They were too unique for a simple label—until now.

As we continue to grow, we want to make it easier for new pet parents to discover these recipes. That means giving them a proper name and a fresh new look that better tells their story—while keeping the same human grade quality you’ve always trusted.

We can’t wait for you to see the update! You’ll start noticing the refreshed packaging rolling out on shelves soon. For a little while, you may receive either version—and both are packed with the same ingredients you and your pets already love.

What inspired the name?

Our dehydrated foods make it easy to serve your pet a homemade meal made with real, whole foods. The name Wholemade alludes to both of these key traits.

Did you change the recipes?

While we are continually improving our recipes and made some slight adjustments to the sequencing of ingredients, each recipe still contains the same ingredients as before, with one exception: we’ve removed basil from our Grain Free Chicken recipe. However, this small tweak is not likely to make a significant difference to your pet!

Additionally, you’ll notice we made our ingredient panels easier to read. We removed descriptors like “dehydrated” to improve readability.

Why is your 2 lb recipe in a bag now?

As we set out to improve the experience of shopping for our dehydrated foods, we found that customers were most dissatisfied with the lack of a resealable bag on our 2 lb recipes. We surveyed a panel of customers prior to making this decision and found overwhelming support for this change. We’re excited to now provide this improved experience!

What happened to Gourmet Grains?

These recipes still exist! However, we've decided to simplify how we present our line and now call these recipes "Wholemade" as well. You’ll find these dual protein options as our Whole Grain Beef & Salmon, Whole Grain Turkey & Fish, and Whole Grain Chicken & Duck recipes.
