Casey

Casey /

I have been a big fan of THK for a long time and had mostly used it for Kong stuffing or as the occasional special treat. In early 2018, our dog Casey joined the house. Originally intended to be only a foster dog, it very quickly became evident that Casey would be home with us forever, due to his myriad of serious health issues as well as behavioral concerns. Casey was a cruelty case; he is permanently missing a portion of his front leg as a result of the long list of damage that was intentionally inflicted on him. Even more concerning however where Caseys internal medicine related concerns. Casey has chronic erlichiosis (a tick-borne disease) and struggled with blood-work related abnormalities such as a low platelet count and abnormal white cell count. The erlichiosis has developed into an auto-immune condition similar to SLE (systemic lupus) or immune-mediated polyathritis. Several of his flare-ups have unfortunately taken a toll on Caseys liver and kidneys. In early 2020, in an attempt to control his liver disease, Caseys veterinarian recommended switching him to a low fat prescription diet. After reading the ingredient list of that diet, I quickly decided I wanted to look for an alternative. Home cooking was not an option because Casey would not eat the food, and I was already familiar with the Honest Kitchen, so naturally it was a go to choice. Thanks to The Honest Kitchens transparency when it comes to each foods ingredients and nutritional value, it was super easy to analyze each product and see if it would be a fit for Casey. We found a winner in THKs Whole Grain Beef Recipe (dehydrated). It matched the low fat prescription diet in all of the important criteria (low fat, moderate protein, low sodium) PLUS it actually contained, real, human-grade, healthy ingredients. Casey is a huge fan of kibble (he wants his food to have a crunchy texture), so it was a bit of a struggle to transition him over to the dehydrated food, but with a bit of persistence we managed. He has now been eating his Honest Kitchen food for several month and just recently got news that his liver has improved a bit. Very exciting. THK has also been great for Casey as it comes to his digestion and coat. The minimal processing is aiding his arthritis and helping his immune system. We would enthusiastically recommend THK to anyone!
