Golden Retriever

During the summer months, we would feed our golden retrievers on a raw food diet because we knew it was best for them. My mornings would be spent in the garage, cutting and pounding down chicken and turkey meat. I was able to do this during the summer because I am a teacher and had the time in the summer to do all the prep work. Due to time constraints, by October or November, wed be back on a kibble diet. By the third summer, we broke down and bought a commercial meat grinder so we could continue our raw feeding throughout the year. My husband and I process and pack up 100-200 pounds of chicken and turkey at a time. In addition to the ground meat, we also feed our five golden retrievers raw meaty turkey necks and chicken backs which we do not grind. Our dogs are happier on the human grade raw food we feed them. Their diets are about 80% ground meat and raw meaty bones with 15% vegetables and 5% fruits.
nOur dogs dispositions changed on raw food. They became calmer, more focused during training and more satiated. Their coats have become fuller, longer and silky sleek. Their bodies are strong and lean, yet muscular. There was an incredible difference in their stools, which are now smaller, dryer, and almost odorless on raw.
nAs an occasional breeder of champion line golden retrievers, it has been my goal to raise a litter of pups on raw and have the new families continue the raw diet. Many of our prospective puppy families are interested in feeding raw, but they arent ready to be committed to the purchasing, preparing, and storing of large quantities of raw food.
nThis is where Honest Kitchens is the answer to our dilemma. With dehydrated, 100% human grade healthy food, the puppies can easily be getting the benefits of raw, without the mess and fuss that comes from preparing it yourself.
nWe have just started purchasing Healthy Kitchens turkey (Embark) and beef (Love) based foods to use several times a week with our goldens. We will continue feeding our own raw meals, but substitute Honest Kitchens meals a few times throughout the week to see how they adjust. These feedings will be to give our dogs a more varied diet because to be honest, we cant easily come up with the variety of foods used by Honest Kitchens. The cost of purchasing free range beef is prohibitive in our area. We dont want to buy factory farmed beef from the grocery store, so Honest Kitchens gives us another option. We also want to be able to tell our prospective puppy families the benefits of Honest Kitchens from our personal experience.
nAnother Honest Kitchens exciting benefit we are exploring is being able to have our dogs eat well on Honest Kitchens when we are hiking and camping. The logistics of feeding fresh raw meat on a trip are almost impossible, especially when camping and back country hiking. Using Honest Kitchens dog food is an experience we are looking forward to as a compliment to our dogs current raw food diet.
