Edith Ann

Edith Ann / My friend Kay is a representative for www.aussierescue.org, a national rescue for Australian Shepherds. Late in December 2012 she volunteered to whelp a litter from a purebred Aussie who had been surrendered to rescue after her owner died. Kay expected the usual 5 or 6 puppies, but on December 27, 11 healthy puppies were born. The day they were born I saw the puppy I had been dreaming of regularly for the past 2 months and told Kay I wanted that puppy and only that one. A few days later Kay asked me to name her... but the name had to start with the letter E because the litter theme was the elite eleven. I looked through a name list online and saw the name Edith and immediately thought of Lily Tomlin's little girl Edith Ann on the TV show Laugh-In in the 1970s. People of a certain age respond with smiles and laughter to her name. My posts and photos of her on Facebook earn lots of likes and comments.

nWhen Edith Ann was around 3 weeks old, it became apparent that she and her red sister Ember had a different sire than the other 9 puppies, who had unquestionably been sired by a son of the dam from an earlier litter. Edith and Ember's sire had a smooth coat and large prick ears. Since Edith Ann has a lot of terrier characteristics and personality (digs, runs like a rat terrier, is tenacious, wants to catch small game), we think her sire must have been a terrier mix of some sort.

nWe picked up Edith Ann on February 27, 2013 and she went to her first puppy manners class in March. She is about to start her 5th class to earn her CGC later this month. She is a happy, smart, fun-loving girl who is the perfect playmate to dogs of all sizes and ages. Her favorite game is disc dogging, and we will train for competition this spring. We are also going to train for agility and rally. She is easy to train (especially when I bring out the Quickies... she will do anything for Quickies!) and just amazes me with her love of learning.

nWe have an older Aussie mix, Vladi, also from that same rescue. He was a bit grumpy about having a rowdy puppy bouncing around and made sure she knew he didn't want her near him. For about 3 weeks, as he napped under the computer desk in my office, she would inch closer and closer to him. If she got too close, he would growl and she would stay where she was. One day I looked under the desk and saw she was sleeping with her little head on his big fuzzy butt. A few days later her playful persistence paid off and they started playing. I cried with joy when I saw that. They are good friends now, and Edith Ann knows when he is hurting and will not bother him. But she is always ready to play if he is up to it.

nI have had many dogs over the years, but Edith Ann is special. She is very intuitive and empathetic, which I admire so much. She's a snuggler and a sweet little thing, and she's naughty as most puppies are. I adore Edith Ann!
