Hudson /

We have been using Honest Kitchen for about 5 years now. In the spirit of full disclosure we do not feed it as a full meal, but rather use it as a topper when at home and to off set bulk/weight when we go camping/backpacking. Hudson (black, 5yo Great Dane, 175lbs) had giardia as a puppy and for a while his gut was very finicky. We had planned to use the HK as a topper with his normal food to get him to take his medications/supplements, but for a while fed it to him as his full meal because it was easiest for his system to process. Eventually we learned that he cannot tolerate chicken very well and he had no issues switching protein sources with the HK. When his gut finally recovered/matured enough that we could reintroduce kibble, we kept the Honest Kitchen as a topper, as we originally intended it to be. As he grew up and we started camping with him we knew that carrying a few full meals of kibble was going to be too much, even once he was grown. That pack space is valuable and the less weight he needed to carry the better. So we cut his kibble portions in half and added a full portion of HK- it not only cuts the weight/bulk but gives him more nutrition than his regular full meal. Out on the trail that means he keeps his energy levels and weight up. It also means that we can pack for longer trips - he can pack 5 days instead of 3. We have added more dogs to the pack, Yahn (fawn, 3yo Great Dane, 130lbs) and Kona (4yo Rottweiler rescue, 98lbs), and they both love the HK too. When Kona eventually camps (her tent manners are not quite up to snuff yet) her full meals will be HK and the boys will probably be very jealous. We will always have a box in the dogs' cupboard, and I keep a stash of meals in the car for emergencies - when we went to pick up Yahn at the breeders it was supposed to be a day trip... flat tires and snow storms turned it into an overnight trip and I was totally unprepared to feed Hudson dinner and breakfast. So thank you Honest Kitchen, for making a wonderful food that allows us to be wild and adventurous. Without you our weekends away would be far too short.
