Joe and Gabby

Joe and Gabby / We rescued Joe and Gabby as 4 week old puppies from an abused litter. We always fed them what we considered excellent quality food from major manufacturers; they were very healthy and thriving until about age 5, when Joe was diagnosed with Mast Cell Tumor Cancer. He underwent surgery to remove the cancer from his thigh. Once recovered, he ruptured the tendons in the same leg and had reconstructive surgery to repair them. Soon after, he began drinking water incessantly, was having digestive problems with vomiting and diarrhea and wouldn't eat the food he normally ate very well. Around the same time, Gabby, his sister, began having similar digestive problems and started turning up her nose to the food as well. We took them to the vet, had several tests run and found that Joe was in moderate kidney failure and Gabby was diagnosed with Pancreatitis. We switched them to two different prescription diets at the vet's recommendation. From the start, they did not eat the prescription food well, and when they did eat, they picked at it. It was a struggle to get them to eat at all. The vet assured us that this was normal and a result of the kidney failure and bland diets provided by the prescription foods. At our wits end with the eating struggle, weight loss, and bile vomiting, we were recommended by a friend to a holisitic veterinarian. We visited him and he recommended several holistic remedies for our dogs, including the Honest Kitchen food - the Base Mixes to control the type of protein we provide our pets and minimize the phosphorous levels in their diet. After we used a couple of sample packets provided to us by the vet, we switched Joe and Gabby to the Honest Kitchen food and haven't looked back since! Gone are the days of picky eating, digestive problems, weight loss and vomiting! They love the food! Joe's kidney failure has not worsened (which, with kidney failure, is the goal!) and Gabby's pancreatitis is gone. Their coats are shinier, their weight is easily managed and they are happier and healthier as they move into their Senior years.
