All True Stories
Kincaid is a trained Seeing Eye Dog from New Jersey. He didn't quite make the cut as a seeing eye dog because they say he's a little overprotective. We don't see that trait in him at all and (shh!) we think they may have given us the wrong dog because he certainly makes the most wonderful-est, purrfect family dog! From the day we brought Kincaid into our home six years ago, we were highly selective about the foods we provided to him, choosing only what we thought were the best ingredients.
n
nDespite our best efforts, in August of 2011, at 6 years old, Kincaid was diagnosed with a fibrosarcoma (a malignant tumor) on his gum that grew from the size of a pea to the size of a grape in under one month. We were devastated with this news! The cancer was growing so fast we had to make some decisions really fast. The recommended treatment for Kincaid was a radical surgery that included removing a part of his jaw bone, followed by radiation three times per week. This would buy him some time and the prognosis was estimated at 11 months with treatment. Without radiation, the prognosis was not as long.
n
nBeing a holistic-minded family (and I am a vegetarian who keeps organic), this was not an option for us. Our number one goal was to maintain a good quality of life for Kincaid for as long as possible. So we immediately started him on a holistic cancer diet (The Budwig Protocol) and I began to mix an all-raw diet and feed that to him.
n
nThis was a lot of work but well worth the time and effort. Kincaid's tumor growth slowed down significantly and he bypassed his prognosis. Over the course of 2 years, the tumor grew from the size of a grape to the size of a large gumball. He loved his homemade food and seemed happy and pain-free. During these two years, my biggest concern was keeping fresh meat in stock in the event of an emergency or power failure. We live in NJ and made it through Hurricane Irene and Hurricane Sandy, but I began to worry that we were pressing our luck. So I thought it may be a good idea to freeze dry Kincaid's food.
n
nAround the same time, my butcher shop changed ownership and I became suspect of the quality of the meat from the new owners. When your dog is diagnosed with cancer, you find yourself questioning every single thing they come into contact with including food, treats, and water. In my search for a backup plan, I found The Honest Kitchen at my local pet store.
n
nI brought home a trial package for Kincaid and his sister Baccia to taste. Kincaid is not a very picky eater; I bet he'd eat a rubber boot if I gave it to him. But Baccia is a completely different story and can be quite the picky eater. Honestly, I didn't have high hopes for her liking this new freeze-dried food. But to my surprise, they both thoroughly enjoyed their new food! I only wish I had bought additional trial packages because they wanted more! more! more!
n
nThis food really fit the bill for us. It allows me to spend less time preparing dog food and more time enjoying quality time with my dogs. I quickly decided to leave the raw diet behind and put our dogs on Embark and Force for 100% of their meals. Before each meal, they both hop around the kitchen, barking and howling for their food!
n
nSince changing over to The Honest Kitchen food, both dogs are so peppy! Kincaid began to slow down a little bit at 8 years old, but several weeks after I started him on The Honest Kitchen food, my 110 pound dog hops around the kitchen like a little bunny rabbit! And the best part? His tumor literally FELL OFF. I couldn't believe my eyes when recently I looked at his mouth to find that most of the tumor is gone. This makes me want to hop around the kitchen right next to him!
n
nI am not a doctor; I'm simply a loving dog-owner. The only thing I changed was Kindcaid's food. I can't scientifically state that your food cures cancer, but this is our story and I just wanted to share it with you. Kincaid is now 1 1/2 years beyond his prognosis, and lives a completely happy and normal dog life, playing with Baccia, chewing bones, and running around the yard :)
n
nWe are so thankful and blessed to have found your pet food. Thank you.
