Leloo
American Eskimo — Age 8
Leloo is my travel buddy, work companion and all-around spazz. She doesn't know a stranger, will never outgrow her dislike of squirrels and is never short on energy. She's also no longer a puppy and I wanted to make sure she didn't develop weight issues in middle age that would then plague her forevermore. And while I always bought (what I thought) was 'high quality food,' something that doesn't ever go bad/rot can't be that healthy, right? Kinda like that hotdog that you forgot in the refrigerator back in the 90's? Anyway. I was on a walk (with Leloo) one day and ran into my neighbor and his dogs (Great Danes) - the oldest of which is 11yrs old (as of this writing) and that is not a typo. My neighbor swears by raw feeding, and while his older dog may be a freak of nature, both look incredibly healthy, mobile and have no health issues. How does this relate to The Honest Kitchen? About a week after the above conversation, Leloo had a regular vet appointment, and she had gained some weight, was kinda lethargic, but still generally healthy. We talked diet, teeth cleaning and the usual - they suggested some fancy food and vitamin blend due to her age and to keep her weight in check. And that's when I decided to look more into a healthier diet for her that didn't require lugging a freezer around everywhere we went. And though my searching, that's how I discovered the Honest Kitchen. I didn't phase her into the food - I did a hard switch. Her stomach handled it great - and she loved it immediately. I was able to manage the volume of food more precisely, and got her weight back to normal over the course of a few months. Her shedding actually decreased (other than the usual spring molt) and her energy improved. Leloo has been on the Honest Kitchen diet for over a year. I do switch the food around every couple months (boredom) and sometimes add a crunchy topper for variety. Even with varying amounts of exercise due to her human working too much or winter weather, her weight stays consistent, her energy is good, and they vet has nothing but good things to say when we do bi-annual visits.
