Maya
Maya and I have had quite the life together. I got her when she was 5 months old, and 2 months later she was playing ball and broke her leg. Recovery was really rough because her splint somehow got too tight on her leg and she ended up losing one of her toes. She had to be taken to the vet every other day to have her leg/foot cleaned and her wrap changed, which as you can imagine was tough on us both. Keeping a puppy calm to allow their leg to heal is quite the task! After we got that all healed up, life went back to normal for years to come. Fast forward to now, when Maya is 9-1/2 years old and has been healthy her whole life (after the leg incident). We walk regularly, and play all the time. For being an older gal, she never acted like it! One day, she developed a cough that I initially thought was allergies, since we had walked the day before and it was really windy. But when the cough persisted and seemed to be getting worse, I made an appointment for her to see the doc. As a dog that has never had a cold, to develop an aggressive cough was definitely out of the ordinary, so I wanted her to be seen as soon as possible. By the time she was able to be seen, she had been coughing for 3 days so I was really getting worried. She had stopped eating and was very weak. Initially my vet thought Maya had contracted kennel cough. All of her symptoms pointed that direction, but something inside me just kept thinking I better have them take X-rays, so thats what we did and the news I received was pretty shocking. Im so sorry to tell you, but Maya has a baseball sized mass in her right lung were the words my veterinarian said to me which stunned me in to silence. That was the hardest day of our life, since the beginning of our story. Given the current state of Mayas health, and her lack of wanting to eat, my vet suggested that I try The Honest Kitchen to see if the whole food ingredients would entice her to eat and it worked. The first bowl of food I made for her, she couldnt get enough! The Honest Kitchen is what got Maya eating again, and Im so grateful for it. Maya is almost 3 months out from her diagnosis, and she is doing great! We had check in X-rays done at the end of October and her mass is smaller! Her health getting better has been achieved by simply changing her diet from kibble, to whole food and also being on herb treatment from my alternative medicine veterinarian. ??
