Obadiah

Australian Cattle Dog — Age 12

I have been a dog lover since before I could talk. Which is especially impressive when you consider that I was not allowed to have pets as a child due to my father's allergies and particular dislike for dogs! I got my first dog shortly after graduating college and less than a year later, we added Obadiah to the family. He is everything I wanted in a dog: devoted, active, highly intelligent, trustworthy, and protective.
nBecause my dogs are essentially my children, I have always fed the the best food I could find. This has sometimes been a challenge when we've lived in rural areas. (I love that I can order Honest Kitchen directly from their website!) For his whole life, Obie has been eating good-quality fish-based kibble. Sadly, last year he had a cancerous lump removed just one month after I lost my cat to a different type of cancer. It was the impetus I needed to think more carefully about what I was feeding my pets.
n
nEven though I was feeding good food, it was all baked. I have been learning about acrylamide, a potential carcinogen, which is created when foods are exposed to dry heat (like baking). Maybe, I thought, my pets need to be eating primarily un-baked foods. This was when I started researching dehydrated diets and raw options. The first one I tried was Honest Kitchen.
n
nAfter just a few weeks on the Kindly base mix plus canned fish, I noticed a difference in Obie's coat. He has always been one to have a rather coarse haircoat that would get kind of grimy, for lack of a better word. I figured it was because we live on a farm and he doesn't get a bath more than once every other month. Plus, Heelers typically have a rougher coat than many breeds. His hair never seemed unhealthy (and I've felt a lot of fur in all my years working at a vet clinic and volunteering at the Humane Society!). But despite what I thought was normal, his coat felt so much softer and even cleaner after a few weeks on this food!
n
nI am very impressed and hope that my happy boy lives many more years eating real food.
nLet food be thy medicine...
