Phoenix

Phoenix / Phoenix was found abandoned in the San Joaquin Valley area of California. He was severely malnourished, literally skin and bones. The heavy chain he was wearing permanently scarred his neck. He was covered in ticks. The shelter listed him as a Rhodesian Ridgeback but it was so hard to tell what he was, given his emaciated condition. When he arrived at Ridgebacks in Need, California (RINCAL), he was not able to walk without falling over. He staggered, fell, got up, fell again and gradually made his way forward. He spotted a piece of wet particle board and lunged at it, fell over, managed to grab it and swallowed it in one gulp. Phoenix was frantic for food. We started him on small amounts of Honest Kitchen, five times a day. He was impossible to hand feed as he would grab your entire hand in his mouth. After the first week, Phoenix had his first vet visit. His lab work was okay considering the dreadful shape he was in. There were some issues, such as anemia, but everything pointed to “he should be okay once he puts on a bit of weight and gains some strength.” After two weeks he had sadly lost one pound and his vet sent us off to UC Davis. More x-rays and bloodwork were done. Erlichia was noted so antibiotics were prescribed. Phoenix has been on medication for 10 days now and is eating his Honest Kitchen eagerly but not frantically as he had been doing. He is able to enjoy his meals as he has learned there is a steady supply of food for him daily. He is the sweetest dog ever and we are so glad we were able to start him on a great diet using Honest Kitchen!
