Remy

Poodle — Age 2

I would say that my standard poodle, Remy, is a picky eater, but he may just have a more refined palette! I am elated that my furry baby enjoys eating his Honest food. Remy has never been food motivated and since he was a puppy, he never did well with traditional kibble. I describe the situation as: Remy ate because he was hungry, not because he liked his food. I tried every premium brand, but he would always turn up his nose. I like to split his daily amount of food into two mealtimes, but Remy would rarely want kibble in the morning and if he did eat, he would often throw up shortly afterwards. It is important to note that he is a very… slow… eater. When he ate his kibble in the evening, it was a struggle too. I began to mix it with premium canned food, which was more expense and work. This helped temporarily, but Remy grew bored with the pâté/stew, and even the very limited (only one) ingredient canned loaf. With observation during this time and veterinarian consults, it was thought he may have sensitivity to ingredient(s). But limited ingredient kibble and novel proteins did not help. Note: his poop was never an issue, fortunately. At this point, I started to venture away from kibble and noticed that Remy enjoyed and did well with a raw food brand. I used it primarily as a snack. The issue I faced with frozen raw as Remy’s main diet was not only the expense, but the inconvenience of freezing and thawing. I wanted something that he liked, and also traveled well. I looked into a freeze dried raw diet, but it is also very costly for a 63 pound dog like Remy. I was familiar with The Honest Kitchen and its Human Grade seal, but wasn’t educated on the brand beyond that. I decided to give it a go after appreciating the ingredients on the label. I started with the 2 pound dehydrated formula as a trial, and Remy loved it! So I got another, then the trend continued. Remy also loved a couple of trial bags of clusters too! So I upgraded to a larger bag and he now enjoys both foods. For example, at breakfast he may eat clusters, then for dinner he’ll eat dehydrated. He responds very well to the variety in textures, as well as a rotation of flavors. I have kept a diet diary during Remy’s food journey and it’s a delight to see how he is a proper eater now, and there’s no more struggle. The dehydrated food is convenient for travel— just adding water and waiting a few minutes is no problem at all. The clusters provide even more convenience, and the ingredients, cooking method and aroma are better than I find traditional kibble to be. I believe that Remy has a normal appetite because of that aroma/flavor that comes from the high quality ingredients and minimal processing. I am thrilled that mealtime is a pleasure for Remy (and me) with The Honest Kitchen. He actually enjoys his food and I can feel good about myself for giving him a better diet that is more nutritious.
