SAILOR

Pomeranian — Age 5

I have been on a five year journey with little blue-eyed Sailor Blue to find a food that he not only will eat, but is super nutritious and filled with the very best ingredients. Sailor came to us as a very unhealthy 3 month old Pomeranian mix. We suspect he is part Yorkie. He had dark circles under his eyes, poor body weight, and would vomit bile first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, sometimes even blood. After several vet visits and medications, we finally got him past all that. Sailor has the tiniest little mouth I have ever seen on a dog, and even the super premium kibbles marketed for small breeds were too hard for him to eat. The only way I could get him to eat was to put a few bites of our family's meals in his bowl as a topper. But he would just eat the "people" food, and leave the dog food. Smart guy, huh?? Because he is so tiny and had such a rocky start in life, I stressed about him getting the proper nutrition from just our table scraps. Then, a few weeks ago our oldest, a 13 yr old Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix was diagnosed with heart disease. This put me in double mama bear mode, and I made it my mission to find the very best food for our dog's health and quality of life. Years earlier, I had tried another brand of dehydrated food, but it had such a strong smell of spices that none of our 5 little dogs would even go near it. I had seen THK foods at our local pet food store, but remembering how they detested the other brand I just passed it on by and kept trying other wet foods, freeze dried raw, subscription foods.... Sailor wasn't having any of it. Finally I decided to try dehydrated again and purchased THK's Fruit and Veggie Base, which I added my home cooked ground turkey to. He still wouldn't eat, but the other dogs were eating it so I determined to keep trying. The Honest Kitchen has everything I wanted in a dog food, even added Taurine to prevent DCM, and I liked that I could mix it up fresh for them at meal time so it was nice and warm. I made up my mind I was done giving them super processed kibble. It can't be good for them. I wasn't going to give up! I ordered the Gourmet Grains Chicken & Duck and mixed it with a little fresh cooked grass fed ground beef and liver, and some finely chopped kale cooked in with the meat. Sailor still wouldn't eat, so I picked him up and put him on my lap and fed him with a baby spoon!! As I'm feeding him, I feel his little tummy burp. So I've ordered some additional probiotic supplements for him hoping to get his gut healthy so he can enjoy eating. I would say it took about 10 days for our other dogs to decide they really like The Honest Kitchen. Usually after ten days on straight kibble or canned food, they would be leaving a lot of food in their bowls. Now, they all sit at my feet while I am preparing their meals and lick their bowls clean!! I will probably have to continue spoon feeding little Sailor, as I really think he doesn't like getting his facial hair messy digging in a bowl, but I don't mind. I am just happy he is eating good, sound nutritious meals and hopefully his little tummy will keep getting better! The Honest Kitchen's customer service is top notch. I had so many questions and they were all happily answered. I love that they give rewards if you sign up through their website. The rewards add up quickly for awesome discounts on future orders. I am a customer for life. I'm even considering getting some dehydrated cat food to add as a topper for the five ferals I feed so they can have a better chance at happy, healthy lives.
