Zuri

Zuri / Zuri (formerly Rocky) came to us from a rescue in our area. His previous owner's son decided to shave him and while doing so severed his Achilles tendon. They said they did not notice he was hurt until they found maggots on his wound. They put him in a pen to keep the coyotes away and he spent the next 3-4 months in a pen in 100 degree heat. By the time he came to the rescue he was about 5 months into his injury. The surgeon did not think he would be able to use his leg again but his hips were not strong enough to have his leg removed. We decided to have the surgery and a few of us donated for the surgery. Zuri was already adopted to another family who were unemployed and could not afford the surgery. A few of us met Zuri (Rocky at the time) the day prior to the surgery. At that time Zuri would not leave mine or my husbands side. He stuck (or picked) by us the entire visit. Per the surgeon the tendon had retracted about 5 inches. He said he had to stretch the tendon to reconnect, and gave our little boy a 30% chance or recovery and the ability to use his leg. Since the new adopted owners could not afford to give Zuri the rehab he so needed they released him and my husband and I swept him up. He spent 2 months in a cast and 9 months in an customer made brace to slowly stretch out his tendon. We did stretches, cold laser, toe stretches ... what ever they suggested we did that faithfully. At that time we live on a 3rd floor apartment with no elevator, my husband sometimes had to carry him up the stairs as we were not allowed to have a pet... when I think of it how funny we hid a 85 pound dog from the landlord for a year. In the middle of all this with his leg our little guy had a tumor coming from his bum which meant our little sweet boy needed to have surgery ... again. He came through that and everything was fine. We decided that it was not fair for him to live in an apartment, so a house hunt pursued... the requirements... minimal stairs for him to climb but the most important thing was an open space to take him on daily walks. We moved into our new house last fall and Zuri is doing what Pyrenees do best and that is protect. He is a happy boy now and is living the best life we can give him... after all... he deserves it. We are feeding him The Honest Kitchen for no other reason that we feel it is the best food out there and he deserves the best. He just loves this food and for that reason alone, we will never feed him anything else. Thank you Honest Kitchen !!
