About The Honest Kitchen
The Honest Kitchen is one of the few pet food brands using 100% human grade ingredients, meaning every ingredient meets the same safety and quality standards as human food. Unlike most pet foods made
with feed-grade ingredients, we prioritize higher-quality sourcing, transparency, and minimal processing to deliver better nutrition and taste.
Additionally, we’re committed to a high standard of nutrition and safety. We craft our foods without fillers like corn,
wheat and soy. We’re thoughtful with our ingredient sourcing – only working
with suppliers we know and trust, and ensuring all ingredients are non-GMO.
Lastly, we have an extensive quality
assurance program that ensures all products we release are rigorously tested
for pathogens to ensure they’re safe for consumption.
The above describes The Honest Kitchen’s
unwavering commitment to nutrition, quality and safety. We’re proud of the immense effort we put into delivering high-quality, human grade pet food that’s good enough for humans – but meant for pets.
The Honest Kitchen is considered the first
human grade pet food brand, and we’re proud of the standard we helped create.
“Human grade” means all ingredients are
sourced from the human food supply chain and the facility where the food is made meets the same standards required for human food production. Meanwhile,
standard pet food is only required to meet the quality & safety standards of “feed” for livestock. The human grade standard results in increased safety, quality, and ingredient integrity compared to conventional pet food.

The Honest Kitchen invented the MADEHONEST® process when we crafted the first human grade dry food: Clusters. In order to meet our uncompromising standards for delivering a less processed, human grade dry food we had to develop our own method of manufacturing.
Our process includes:
• Taking nutrient-rich, whole food ingredients like cage free chicken, broccoli, carrots and kale
• Cold-pressing them into bite-sized Clusters
• Roasting and gently dehydrating them until they are golden and delicious!
The end result is a dry food that delivers
superior taste, quality and nutrition that is unlike any other “kibble” on the
market.
We have a rigorous development process to ensure proper formulation for pets. Our recipes are developed in collaboration with leading veterinarians, including board-certified veterinary nutritionists and PhD food scientists.
We ensure that ingredients serve a specific purpose and deliver a solid nutritional punch including appropriate levels of protein, fat and micronutrients.
Our Complete and Balanced recipes are formulated to meet the AAFCO dog food or cat food nutrient requirements and are rigorously tested at an independent ISO accredited laboratory during the product development, production and ongoing maintenance phases to ensure optimal nutrition.
We routinely review ingredients for quality, purpose and palatability and implement beneficial changes for dogs and cats.

Feeding & Transitioning
Feeding amounts depend on your pet’s weight, age, and activity level. Each product includes feeding guidelines that can be
adjusted to maintain a healthy body condition.
We recommend a gradual 7–10 day transition:
•Start with a small amount mixed into current food
•Gradually increase THK while decreasing old food
•Monitor digestion and adjust as needed
Yes. Rotational feeding supports variety and
long-term dietary interest. Many pet parents rotate or mix recipes to keep mealtime engaging.
Many picky pets love The Honest Kitchen’s food because it smells and tastes like real, whole food (since it’s made with real, whole foods!). For very picky eaters, try adding warm water to enhance aroma or start with smaller portions mixed into their current food.
Product Types & Preparation
Dehydrated pet food is made by gently removing moisture from whole food ingredients, preserving nutrients and flavor while offering shelf-stable convenience of a dry food.
The Honest Kitchen’s founder, Lucy Postins, wanted to create a pet food that was a close to homemade and fresh dog food as possible, but wanted it to be more convenient, affordable and shelf stable.
By gently dehydrating real, whole food ingredients, Lucy realized pet parents could simply add warm water to deliver a meal that is just as tasty and nutritious as "human food," without the time, cost, or hassle of cooking it from scratch.
Simply put, dehydration removes moisture while locking in natural nutrition, aromas, and taste. It delivers the same high-quality nutrition as fresh or homemade dog food, but with two major advantages:
•No refrigeration required – It stays fresh in your pantry!
•Minimal prep work – It’s ready in minutes, making it a more practical alternative to frozen or refrigerated fresh brands.
Simply add warm water, wait 3 minutes to let it rehydrate, and serve. It’s an easy way to serve the quality of fresh dog food at home.
If you’re hoping to skip the prep before each meal, you can refrigerate prepared dehydrated food for up to 3-4 days before serving. As human grade nutrition, we always recommend pet parents to treat our food “as you would your own” prepared meals.
Water is required for dehydrated recipes to
properly rehydrate and deliver intended nutrition and texture. Recipes that
require water to be added include our Wholemade dehydrated recipes, Instant
Bone Broth, Instant Goat’s Milk Plus and Protein Plus Meal Toppers. Our other
recipe formats – like Clusters, wet foods, treats and Pour Overs – do not
require water.
Storage & Handling
Prepared food can be refrigerated for up to
2–3 days. Discard any food left out for extended periods.
Store in a cool, dry place and reseal tightly
after opening to maintain freshness.
Value & Pricing
Yes, many customers consider The Honest Kitchen to be an affordable pet food brand, especially when you consider value for the money. We have a wide range of recipes that meet a variety of budget needs.
•Essential Clusters Our dry food is priced similarly to premium kibble but uses significantly higher-quality, human grade ingredients. It is one of the most affordable ways to provide human grade quality and safety without sacrificing the convenience of scoop-and-serve food.
•Wholemade™ Dehydrated Our dehydrated recipes are a significantly lower-priced alternative to fresh dog food. While made with the same real ingredients and human grade standards, our dehydrated food is 1/4 the cost of leading fresh dog food brands (based on the daily cost to feed a chicken recipe to a 30 lb dog using 2026 MSRP).
Because our food is nutrient-dense, a little goes a long way. A 10 lb box of dehydrated food can rehydrate to approximately 40 lbs of fresh food.
Because our food is nutrient-dense, a little goes a long way. Each pound of dehydrated food equals about 4 dry cups of food once rehydrated.
For a standard reference, a 30 lb adult dog with average activity typically eats about 1 dry cup per day. That means:
• A 10 lb box = 40 dry cups
• 40 dry cups ÷ 1 cup/day = 40 days
So, a 10 lb box will last approximately 40 days for a 30 lb dog.
You can estimate other box sizes the same way by using 4 dry cups per pound and dividing by your dog’s daily feeding amount.
