The Honest Difference —

Our main ingredient is truth

Honest is more than a word in our name — it’s who we are and strive to be. We believe that the more you learn about The Honest Kitchen, the more likely you are to serve it to your pets.

It’s not a slogan, it’s a standard —

100% Human Grade

Food

We have a bone to pick with most mass-produced, feed-grade pet food brands. They use words like “natural” and “healthy” for feed-grade products that are far from acceptable to us. To ensure your pets eat the safest, healthiest and highest quality foods, insist on 100% human grade. It’s a real standard no feed-grade food can claim.

Ingredients with integrity.

From eggs and salmon to pumpkin and parsley, wholesome foods you recognize and can pronounce are the only ingredients we use. And what we leave out is as important as what we put in.

Sources we trust.

To meet our 100% human-grade standard, our suppliers must provide proof of food origins, screening, handling, cleaning and more. We only source from folks we know and trust, including a few we started with back in 2002.

Kitchens, not compromises.

Our company started in our founder’s kitchen, where she made meals for her family. Today, we’re still preparing our food alongside people food, because we’re 7x cleaner than feed-grade facilities and inspected by the FDA.

A thoughtful process.

We’ve adopted a time-honored technique for preserving the nutrients in our foods — dehydration. We ditch the heavy processing of feed-grade foods, taking a gentler approach instead.

Some Honest Opinions

★★★★★

After much research into different types of dog food, I felt discouraged and began to feel I would have to home prepare the food. Then I discovered the Honest Kitchen brand. I priced all the items I would need to make the food myself and found Honest Kitchen's food was cheaper. Now they really had my attention. I began with a few samples from their direct website. My dogs ate it like it was a treat; a reaction I'd only previously received when feeding them salmon or peanut butter.

★★★★★

Great stuff. My dog likes it, it is easy to use, especially convenient for travel. The Honest Kitchen uses very high quality ingredients, better than I could find in my rural area at any price. I believe health begins with diet and I am very satisfied my dog is getting the best human-quality organic chemical free ingredients.

★★★★★

I have been feeding The Honest Kitchen food now for about two months and all three of my Mini Aussies LOVE it. This recipe is one that they really go for and I like the protein level on this food. I like the idea that my dogs get a warm meal. I do use this food with their dry food being I am feeding 3 dogs and it works very well and I found that my dogs teeth have NO TARTER when I clean the teeth and that have never happened before. My twelve year old Neko's teeth look fantastic!

Inside The Honest Kitchen —

What we’re all about.

We share a love and respect for animals, their owners and the planet we all live on. It’s why we source the best ingredients, create the healthiest and tastiest recipes, and take such good care of our customers. Our history, team and values shape every meal we make.

Take a look inside

Pet food quality standards

The Honest Kitchen does more than meet the highest standard for food safety and quality — we invented it. A few other pet food brands have since followed our lead, but most continue to use inferior, feed-grade ingredients. Once you learn the difference, you’ll never go back to feed grade again.

Human-Grade Pet Food

  • ~5 pet food brands meet this standard.
  • Highest Quality.
  • Subject to ~100 manufacturing and quality control regulations.
  • Meets the same strict standards the FDA sets for human food.
  • Ingredients must be safe for consumption, even by people, and may not include by-products, waste or "4D" meats.

Feed-Grade Pet "Food"

  • ~1,000 pet food brands meet this standard.
  • Lowest Quality.
  • Subject to ~15 manufacturing and quality control regulations.
  • Meets the basic standards the FDA sets for animal feed.
  • Ingredients may include slaughter by-products, restaurant or supermarket waste, feathers or "4D" meats: animals dying, diseased, disabled or dead.

Our Promise to You

A vast majority of pet food makers use stuff we never use from places we don't trust. The Honest Kitchen is made in the USA and never contains the potentially unsafe and unhealthy ingredients found in feed-grade products.

No By-products
or fillers

No Additives or preservatives

No "4D" meats
or feathers

NO CORN, WHEAT
OR SOY

No Ingredients

No GMO Ingredients

Farmers and growers that measure up

It’s hard to get on our list — and for good reason. Our suppliers must certify they meet the strictest standards for food safety and health as well as sustainability and fair-trade practices.

Every year, each of our dog food suppliers signs our “Human Food Grade Guarantee” and “Statement of Quality and Integrity.” We think it’s important you know what they have to live up to.

  • Foods maintain human-edible status from harvest and all handling, screening and cleaning, through delivery to our human-food plant.
  • Every ingredient includes a Statement of Country of Origin.
  • Supplier adheres to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
  • Foods are not genetically modified
or subject to engineered recombinant DNA technology.
  • Verification that all ingredients are free
of chemicals or adulterants.
  • Verification that all foods are free of chemical preservatives, such as Ethoxyquin.
  • Supplier follows sustainability and fair-trade practices where applicable.
  • Supplier guarantees ingredients do not originate from China.

Safety and quality you can see

100% Human-Grade Kitchens

Most pet food makers would never invite you inside their kitchens—because they’re not kitchens. They’re heavy processing plants. But our food is prepared right alongside breakfast cereals and bakery mixes, so it satisfies the same rigorous safety, cleanliness and quality standards of people food.

  • Registered and inspected by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration).
  • Meet SQF (Safe Quality Foods) level II standards for human food safety.
  • Exceed all proposed FDA guidelines.
  • Exceed HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) food safety regulations.
  • Exceed established GMPs
(Good Manufacturing Practices).

A higher standard of quality assurance.

The Honest Kitchen Food Safety and Quality Assurance Program ensures that all of our recipes meet human-food standards. We analyze food nutrition, monitor water activity and test for pathogens. We also screen for harmful heavy metals in every batch of our food, four times a year.

We test for germs

We test all aspects of our dehydrated dog and cat foods to rule out anything that could possibly hurt your pet. That includes all the bad things you can only see under a microscope, like:

  • Bacteria, such as salmonella, E-coli and listeria.
  • Yeast and mold.
  • Contaminants, such as heavy metals and melamine.
  • Verify pH and proximates (protein, fat, fiber and moisture).
  • Random regular tests of nutrient values for vitamins and minerals.
See the results of our screens (PDFs):

We screen for heavy metals

Heavy metals occur naturally in some ingredients and the FDA hasn’t established tolerance levels for U.S. foods, so, we follow internationally recognized human-food standards set by several agencies around the world.

  • European Union – Commission Regulation 1881/2006 setting maximum levels for certain contaminants in foodstuffs.
  • Codex Alimentarius International Food Standards – Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States, World Health Organization (Revised 2016).
  • Health Canada – Government of Canada,
Maximum Levels for Various Chemical Contaminants in Foods.
  • Australia, New Zealand Food Standards Code – Standard 1.4.1 Contaminants and Natural Toxicants.
  • Food Safety Authority of Ireland – Commission Regulation 488/2014 Maximum Levels of Cadmium in Foodstuffs.

A Lighter Touch

Pet food makers have figured out all kinds of ways to process their products. Most put your need for easy feeding way ahead of what’s best for your pets. We don’t. That’s why we started with dehydrated foods. You’ll tell by the true colors and fresh smells that they’re better for your pets.

The Dehydrated Advantage

  • Retains important nutrients, including vitamins and minerals.
  • Highly concentrated, so a small 10-lb box makes up to 40 lbs of food.
  • Finely ground ingredients are easier for pets to digest.
  • Pets love the taste of our fresh, whole foods.
