AnakinDalmatian — Age 7
Anakin was diagnosed with kidney stones when he was very young. After surgery to remove the stones, the vet recommended we put him on a special prescription diet to prevent further stone forming. After a year or two on the prescription food, we started to notice a huge difference in Anakin, both in demeanor and in health. He was lethargic, and never wanted to play anymore. He also gained quite a bit of weight, and his skin and coat became extremely dry and flaky. He even lost some of the hair around his nose! Since nothing had changed except his food, I started to wonder if it could be the cause. I did some research and found what types of food were "safe" for a stone-forming Dalmatian to eat, and began to entertain the idea of making homemade food for him. However, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to provide all the vitamins and minerals he needed and feared I would make the problem worse. Then I happened to find The Honest Kitchen on the internet. Several of their foods are "safe" for Anakin to eat, and I didn't have to worry about the nutrition part. I was sold! I asked the vet if I could switch him away from the prescription food as long as the ingredients he was eating were on the "safe list", and showed them a print out of The Honest Kitchen food. They agreed as long as we did regular urine tests to make sure no stones were forming. Anakin has been eating Preference, Force, and Zeal for two years now, and what a difference! All his urine tests have come back fine, he went from 79 pounds to 51, his skin and coat are gorgeous, and he totally is acting like a puppy again!!! We sometimes joke that we woke up one day to find a different dog. He also can't wait to be fed, where with the prescription food he would often leave most of it in the dish. I am continually amazed it the changes in him.
