At 8 weeks old I brought Ella home. I was told that she had Megaesophagus and it began a upon weaning. Her beginning was rough and nothing I fed her stayed down, even holding her upright after meals didn't help. She was regurgitating continuously for the first couple of months and had lost so much weight she was skeletal...it was heartbreaking watching this tiny pup literally starving to death. I was told to soak her kibble and pulverize it in a blender, to feed canned food, to feed her in an upright position, use an elevated feeder, you name it....but nothing worked.
I have been a raw feeder for over 30 years and everyone said this couldn't be done with a pup with this condition. It just didn't make sense but I was too afraid to try until I realized if I didn't do something different I might lose her. I was told about a homemade mixture called Satin Balls and while the recipe calls for grains - I don't feed grains in any large amount - I did have a box of Zeal in the house. I replaced the grain portion of the recipe with Zeal - which my two other Shepherds were eating at the time.
BINGO!!! First meal stayed down. So did the second and by the third meal her weight gain was visible!!! It was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen and even took her to visit friends at Naturally 4 Paws who were astounded at the results.
Ella is now 2 years old and 75 pounds. She might have been born with Megaesophagus but unless I tell people, they never even know she has anything wrong. All they say is how gorgeous she is, how silky soft and shiny her coat is and how white her teeth are....and what stamina and energy she has! She continues to thrive on her diet of THK mixed with raw ground meat....so much so that I will, never feed her anything else. I simply rotate between flavors and different types of meat.
I can't thank you all enough for making this most precious food line....all four of my dogs will never be fed anything else. It just makes me giddy to talk to people when they ask what I feed my dogs and I tell them how The Honest Kitchen saved Ella's life.
Thank you Thank you Thank you!
