During a routine exam on October 12, 2016 it was found that Liebchen had enlarged lymph nodes in her groin. Although she had no symptoms, she was diagnosed with lymphoma and we were given a bleak diagnosis of 6-8 months. She was also diagnosed with an enlarged heart. We began chemo and transitioned to THK foods because it was high protein, low carb and I was able to introduce extra water + bone broth to help flush kidneys of toxins from chemo.
Liebchen went into remission and at her one year check up, I learned that her heart went back to normal size. Unfortunately, on 2/14/18, fourteen months post-diagnosis, the cancer returned with a vengeance attacking her GI system. We began chemo again but this time, she experienced serious side effects which required hospitalization to stabilize her. For five days she couldn't eat and for several days, wouldn't drink. However, I was able to make a "slurry" using THK with twice the water. Offering her small amounts throughout the day helped keep her hydrated and although her stomach couldn't handle her regular amount, at least she was getting some nutrients. As each day passed, she was able to eat a little bit more, including "nice mussels" and "Wishes Filets" and she gradually improved. I felt comfortable feeding her these treats because of their high protein content.
Now, one month later, she is doing well...eating good, playing in the snow, chasing squirrels and enjoying long walks again. I believe diet played a critical role in Liebchen's ability to fight this awful disease and credit THK for giving me the extra time with my girl.
Update: Sadly, Liebchen's body, tired from fighting cancer, just could not overcome pneumonia and she lost the battle on 7/18/18. She will always hold a special place in my heart.
