In November of 2012, Lily became severely ill and was hospitalized for several days. After numerous medical tests, the only abnormality detected was an elevated ALT level. The ALT (alanine transaminase) is an enzyme present only inside liver and muscle cells in dogs. High ALT levels are specific for liver damage. When liver cells are injured they become "leaky," releasing ALT in the blood.
While Lily was released from the hospital several days later, it was only the beginning of a long, emotional, and expensive journey. She continually experienced bouts of sickness that required various antibiotics all the while her ALT level continued to be elevated evening reaching almost 500 several times (the normal level is 10-100). During this time, many ailments were considered and treated, numerous tests were conducted, and various diet changes, supplements, and other remedies were administered.
In November of 2013, Lily began eating THK's Zeal dog food. In the prior year, she had tried a number of other 'premium' LID foods but was still experiencing bouts of sickness and elevated ALT levels. Lily had her liver level (ALT) checked on 01/03/2014 (about five weeks after being on a diet of Zeal) and for the first time in about a year and a half, her ALT level registered in the normal range with a value of 91.
Words cannot describe how thankful I am that Lily's liver is functioning normal again. I am certain that changing Lily's food to Zeal contributed significantly to Lily's amazing recovery.
