My overweight German Shepherd

"My shepherds weight went down. Her coat is so much nicer. Her ear infections went away. And her overall health is so much better. Thanks to you “The Honest Kitchen”"

Nancy L. (5/5)

My go-to base navigating varying diets

"My two papillons are on opposite spectrums of nutritional needs. One has high metabolism with chicken allergy, with beef being the single protein. The older girl has slower metabolism with no allergies except beef is too rich in fat upsetting her digestion, and can’t be used as a single protein. She gets turkey or chicken. With the base I am able to nutritionally balance each diet while customizing each protein. It requires home cooked meat and they aren’t mad about it. Never ever do we have a bored dog skipping meals or being finicky. They gobble the fresh hybrid meal up."

Melonie G. (5/5)

"My dog loves The Honest Kitchen!"

So easy and my pup LOVES it!

"This is a GREAT product! I mix this with chicken and my pup LOVES it! The Honest Kitchen has great quality food for my sweet Trooper!"

JoAnna (5/5)

My very tummy sensitive dog

"My very tummy sensitive dog loves eating this food with added protein. Been consistently buying this brand for over a year and he still enjoys it."

Yvonne D. (5/5)

Love the fruit and veggies base mix

"My dog and I love the healthful fruit and veggie base mixes, either with or without grains. I feel good offering her such wholesome food, adding meat (usually beef or chicken) proteins mixed in. She is a healthy weight, is doing well, her coat is smooth and shiny and she seems to love her food!"

Bonnie S. (5/5)

Fantastic food for my pups!

"I love this food, as do my pups! I have 4 dogs of varied ages (5-16 years) and breeds (Pomeranian, pittie, husky-shepherd mix, Havanese-Maltise mix), and they all do great with this food. They’ve been eating Honest dehydrated food for may years. I add dehydrated cod/minnows/beef liver for additional protein. A couple of my pups have very sensitive tummies, but we’ve never had any issues with this food."

Ashley (5/5)

Easy to use

"My toffee loves his yummy meals and the mix is easy to use! Im a busy single gal and i love my puppers. This is actually more convenient for me than premixed raw food. I just add a scoop of dry mix to his bowl. with some water while I wait for my coffee, and then a scoop of raw meat and we both enjoy our meals! I don't worry about mixing, he eats it all up no problem:) I've been feeding him this for over a year and he's doing great!"

Sherry H. (5/5)

Easy, affordable, and effective!

"Honest Kitchen's Base Mix makes it SO easy to prepare and feed fresh food! My working dog looks and feels amazing on his new diet! He has slimmed down since switching off kibble, has more energy, and can work longer with more focus and intensity. Highly recommend Honest Kitchen for any dog!"

Erika K. (5/5)

No longer available in small box

"The food is wonderful. I have been feeding this variety, with an assortment of meats, half and half mixed with my little Italian Greyhound's kibble since she came into our family 5 years ago. She does great on it, it is the best food ever. However, it is now no longer available in the smaller 3 lb box. It took over 3 months to use the small box, because she is just a little dog, and only eats about a half cup of food total every day. If I had to buy her the 7 lb box, it would go bad long before we could use it up. Since she is sensitive to peas and legumes, there are very few other options. Most of the Honest Kitchen foods, other than this, have peas. The other base mixes all have peas. As it is, I am told I am already overextending the shelf life of the smaller open box. A large box is just not an option, unless I was misinformed about how long it keeps after you open the inner bag. If you have a big dog who will eat this food up quickly, or a whole bunch of little dogs, then I would recommend it to everyone. Even though it is our absolute favorite, we are now going to have to look for something different for my sweet little girl. I have communicated with the Honest Kitchen customer service team about this, and there is apparently no way they are going to honor the needs of small dogs and bring the small box back."

Q&A

Other base mixes say to add oil to the final mixture. Is this necessary, and if not, why not? If so, what oil do you recommend?
Hi Joanie, Thank you for reaching out to The Honest Kitchen. Adding other ingredients to our diets is not necessary (except for our base mixes, which require protein to be added). Our foods are formulated to meet the AAFCO Nutrient Profiles and can be fed alone. However, many of our customers love to mix up their companion’s meals with home-made extras. We encourage this because we think pets deserve variety in their diets just like we humans do. Please let me know if you have any other concerns. Best,
Does the base mix box give a recommendation on how many cups of protein (meat, fish, poultry etc) to add to the base mix for each feeding by dog weight? If not, where can I find this information? Also, can the base mix be rehydrated with bone broth vs water?
Hi Carrie, can the base mix be rehydrated with bone broth vs water? Yes, it can. below is our feeding guide for base mixes ![](https://thehonestkitchen.zendesk.com/attachments/token/YMF9JUgdkVyQO43EawZ2OebAf/?name=image.png)
Can this be made in advance portion and frozen....going on vacation don't want my pet sitter to have to make dog food
Hi Beth, Yes you can! and just warm them up by adding warm water before serving or heat at a low temp for a few seconds to a minute. I hope this helps.
Is there bone or bonemeal in the dehydrated base mix? I buy ground meat with bones from my butcher and plan to use that for the protein.
Hi Carrie, Thank you for reaching out to the Honest Kitchen. I hope you are doing well. Our Whole Grain Veggie & Fruit Dehydrated Base Mix has no bone or bone meal. You can see the full list of ingredients via the link below. https://www.thehonestkitchen.com/products/dehydrated-whole-grain-veggie-and-fruit-base-mix-dog-food Please let me know if you have any other concerns. 3 lb box = 12 dry cups
7 lb bag= 28 dry cups

Example: A 30 lb dog with an average activity level is recommended 1/2 dry cups per day. If you purchase a 7 lb box (28 dry cups), it will last 56 days.
